Leica announced the Leica SL3, the next-generation full-frame mirrorless system camera. The SL3 is the latest model of the Leica SL System announced in 2015 as a full-frame mirrorless system that can take both photos and videos. A sample video shot by the SL3 is below:
Leica strived to meet the strict demands of professionals, driving the benchmark and inspiration for development of the SL3. As a result of reflecting these requests, Leica has created a camera that can flexibly respond to a wide range of uses and scenes while improving image quality in both photos and videos.
High-precision optics, mechanisms, and cutting-edge technology are condensed into a Leica-designed body. The resulting in a camera that is lighter, more compact, and more user-friendly than previous models.
New features of Leica SL3
The core of the Leica SL3 is a 35mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS image sensor equipped with triple resolution technology. The image sensor is protected by a robust full metal body wrapped in elegant leather.
Photography on the Leica SL3
For photography, the number of recording pixels can be selected from 60, 36, or 18 million pixels for both DNG (RAW) and JPEG recording formats, making it suitable for a wide range of uses. In addition, regardless of setting, the entire sensor is used during the shoot. With a wide dynamic range of 15 stops and a wide ISO sensitivity range of 50 to 100,000, it delivers high definition and high image quality in all lighting conditions, down to the finest details.
The autofocus function uses three detection methods: phase difference detection (PDAF), depth map (object recognition AF), and contrast detection (contrast AF). The innovative autofocus system that combines these benefits makes it possible to take crisp, sharp images even in scenes with insufficient light. In addition, the intelligent subject detection function supports shooting in moving scenes.
L Mount Lenses
The lens mount uses the standard L mount developed by Leica. In addition to Leica’s L-mount lenses, users can also use high-performance lenses from companies participating in the L-mount alliance. Excellent lens compatibility allows users to use a wide variety of lenses, from ultra-wide angle to super telephoto. In addition, the well-established Leica M lens can be used, and the specially designed image sensor is suitable for shooting with M lenses. It also has image stabilization built into the body, allowing the M lens to fully utilize its potential.
Electronic View Finder
The EVF uses an EyeRes finder. The optical system is precisely made using glass lenses. With a high resolution of 5.76 million dots and a high frame rate of 120fps, the subject is always displayed clearly and smoothly. In addition, by using the exposure preview function, users can check in advance what kind of exposure and composition that can be shot with. The back screen is equipped with a new tilting, high-definition 3.2-inch touch panel LCD monitor that uses an advanced movable mechanism, allowing users to shoot from new angles and pursue even more creative expression.
Shooting Videos on the SL3
When shooting videos, it is possible to shoot high-definition 8K videos, and supports extremely efficient codecs such as H.265 and Apple ProRes. It is also equipped with a timecode interface, allowing it to handle professional-level work in synchronizing video and audio on-site. The “LEICA MAESTRO IV” image processing engine, equipped with “L2 Technology,” supports the entire video shooting process. The newly adopted image processing engine speedily processes vast amounts of information and achieves high-quality depiction with extremely low noise performance and color reproducibility.
In addition, the SL3 features an updated user interface. The shape of the grip and the layout of the buttons are designed to make operation more intuitive, with the user’s comfort in mind when designing the product, including ergonomics, texture, and menu operability. The overall menu structure and icons have been designed to be easier to understand. In addition, by color-coding the display, menu items for photo shooting are red and menu items for video shooting are yellow, making it easier to distinguish between the two while shooting.
Other unique features
One of the features is that the main functions can be easily customized to suit desired preferences and shooting style. By assigning frequently used functions to the FN button, users can quickly recall them when shooting. Menus can also be operated by touch, making them more intuitive and comfortable to use.
Additionally, the user interface on the LCD monitor automatically switches between portrait and landscape display to match the direction in which one would hold the camera, improving operability. The ergonomically designed body is easy to handle and has excellent robustness, ensuring dust and splash resistance equivalent to IP54. This allows users to concentrate more on shooting, even in harsh environments or bad weather. It is also lighter and more compact than previous models, providing more comfortable operability.
Even after purchase, the firmware will be updated regularly to improve functionality and operation based on valuable feedback from users. Firmware updates can be easily performed using Leica’s dedicated app, “Leica FOTOS.”
External Connectivity
Along with the new interface, connectivity with external devices has also been improved, allowing seamless professional-level workflows. The interfaces include a CFexpress Type B memory card slot, an SD memory card (UHS-II) slot, a USB Type-C terminal (for high-speed data transfer, tethered shooting, and charging), and a full-size HDMI 2.1 terminal (for external monitors and (for connection with external recording media). In addition, Bluetooth connection and Wi-Fi connection using MIMO technology enable fast and stable connection with the Leica FOTOS app.
Furthermore, the Leica SL3 is certified by Apple as “Made for iPhone” and “Made for iPad.” Therefore, it can be directly connected to an iPhone or iPad using the included USB Type-C cable.
The battery uses the new high-capacity “BP-SCL6.” A dual battery charger that can quickly charge two batteries at the same time will also be available as an optional accessory. Spare batteries and dual battery charger and spare battery sets are also available. Additionally, a new hand grip and DC coupler have been released as accessories exclusively for the Leica SL system. By inserting the DC coupler into the battery slot of the camera body, it is possible to supply power via the USB Type-C connection.
In addition, a new carrying strap with an innovative attachment method and a highly durable wrist strap for hand grips will also be released as exclusive accessories to support professional-level photography.
“Leica SL3” is scheduled to be released on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Leica Store, Leica Online Store, Leica Boutique, and Leica authorized dealers.
