Varjo has announced its new cutting-edge, next-generation virtual reality headsets: the Varjo XR-4, XR-4 Focal Edition, and XR-4 Secure Edition.”
Varjo asserts that it will provide a VR/MR experience that is almost indistinguishable from the field of view.
Varjo’s 4th generation headset goes well beyond consumer headsets for personal entertainment use cases. They deliver deeply immersive VR for enterprise users seeking the highest levels of visual fidelity and performance.
More than 25% of Fortune 100 companies currently use Varjo’s technology, including training for astronauts and pilots, dramatically shortening car production schedules, breakthroughs in medical technology, and 3D visualization for architects and designers. It is used in
Optimized to run on NVIDIA GPUs and integrated into NVIDIA Omniverse, the XR-4 series enables developers and enterprise users to render photorealistic scenes and raytracing in mixed reality. The combination of these technologies exceeds the computing power achievable with mobile SoCs, which are more commonly used in other companies’ HMDs, and is a game changer for developers.
Varjo-enabled software ecosystem of over 100 third-party PC applications and 3D engines, including Unreal Engine and Unity, integrates the XR-4 Series into the world’s most demanding workflows across training and simulation, design and engineering, healthcare, and more do.
Patrick Wyatt, Chief Product Officer at Varjo, commented:
As MR adoption grows rapidly, the new XR-4 series moves the industry forward by bridging the gap between human vision and computer vision. I’m proud of that.
Over the past five years, Varjo’s customers have demonstrated that true innovation occurs when the most advanced computing power is put in the hands of the best immersive XR and enterprise users. We can’t wait to see the applications developed with the technological breakthroughs of the XR-4 series.
According to Varjo, the company is the first VR device company to bring MR camera pass-through functionality with high-resolution line-of-sight autofocus to the market. The autofocus camera mimics the behavior of the human eye and matches the human acuity required for mission-critical tasks.
Main features of the XR-4 series
(The following is quoted from the press release)
The dual 4K x 4K (3840 x 3744) display has a resolution of 51 PPD, a wide field of view of 120° x 105°, which is 50% wider than the previous generation model, and DCI-P3 with twice the brightness (200 nits) compared to previous generations. Compatible with 96% color gamut display
Photorealistic video pass-through MR with dual 20 megapixel cameras with industry-leading fidelity
New ambient light sensor increases LiDAR resolution by 8x compared to XR-3. This allows for more seamless mixing of real and virtual elements.
Built-in noise canceling microphone and DTS 3D spatial audio compatible speaker
Built-in inside-out tracking
A new Varjo controller is included. Provides high tactile immersion and reduces setup complexity and cost
NVIDIA RTX Ada generation GPU recommended, integrated into NVIDIA Omniverse, a platform for developing applications based on OpenUSD
Optimize seamless cloud streaming, sharing, and collaboration with Varjo Reality Cloud to streamline immersive 3D workflows across your organization
XR-4 Focal Edition
The XR-4 Focal Edition includes all the features of the XR-4, plus a line-of-sight autofocus camera. The camera resolution is further optimized for pilot training and other “cockpit-type” use cases.
XR-4 Secure Edition
The XR-4 Secure Edition is a model optimized for commercial flight simulators. Compliant with enterprise-level security requirements to meet government and defense needs.
Available offline, the Secure Edition is available on both the XR-4 and XR-4 Focal Edition models. These are TAA compliant/non-RF and assembled in Finland.
Varjo expands its secure manufacturing capabilities with a dedicated production line for the XR-4 Secure Edition at a new facility in Espoo, Finland. The production line is expected to start operating in December.
