Canon has announced that it is developing the full-frame mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS R1, as the first flagship model of the “EOS R system” that uses an RF mount. It is aiming to release the camera later in 2024.
What is the Canon EOS R1?
The Canon EOS R1, currently under development, is a professional mirrorless camera that brings together Canon’s most advanced technologies and combines the highest class of performance, durability and reliability required of a flagship camera. It dramatically improves both still image and video performance to meet the high needs of professionals working at the forefront of a wide range of fields, including sports, journalism and video production.
This camera uses the newly developed image engine “DIGIC Accelerator” in addition to the conventional image engine “DIGIC X.” The new image engine system, including the newly developed CMOS sensor, enables high-speed processing of large amounts of data, bringing unprecedented advances in AF and other areas.
By combining the new image engine system with deep learning technology at a high level, high-speed, highly accurate subject recognition has been achieved. For example, the accuracy of subject tracking has been improved, making it possible to continue tracking the target player even when other players overlap in front of the player being photographed in team sports where subjects overlap.
In addition, the AF’s “Action Priority” function quickly analyzes the subject’s situation and recognizes the subject’s action. In sports scenes where it is difficult to predict how the action will play out, the camera automatically identifies a player taking a specific action, such as a shot, as the main subject and instantly moves the AF frame to capture the decisive moment.
The combination of the new image engine system and deep learning technology will also contribute to improved image quality. It will bring image noise reduction, a feature Canon has pioneered in PC software, to camera functions, further improving image quality and contributing to users’ creative endeavors.
Canon says it will continue field testing of the camera, with the aim of helping to capture decisive and moving moments at upcoming global sporting events.
