Fujifilm announced the release of the FUJINON Lens XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR in mid-December 2024. This lens comes as part of the “XF Lens” lineup of interchangeable lenses for the “X Series” mirrorless digital cameras. The suggested retail price is to be determined.
The FUJINON XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR is an ultra-telephoto prime lens that can capture images in the ultra-telephoto range of 500mm. The lens comes with an iris of F5.6 and boasts the highest optical performance of any XF lens.
Taking advantage of the APS-C format, which produces images that are 1.5 times larger in 35mm film equivalent, the lens weighs just 1,335g, making it compact and lightweight despite being a super telephoto lens. Particularly when photographing birds, wildlife, and aircraft, the lens demonstrates the resolution performance of the XF lens and mobility that defies conventional wisdom for telephoto lenses, making super telephoto photography more accessible. The 35mm equivalent focal length is 762mm.
The “XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR” can be combined with a teleconverter to further expand the focal length of the lens. With the “FUJINON Teleconverter XF1.4X TC WR”, you can shoot with a focal length equivalent to a maximum of 700mm (equivalent to 1067mm in 35mm format), and with the “FUJINON Teleconverter XF2.0X TC WR”, you can shoot with a focal length equivalent to a maximum of 1000mm (equivalent to 1524mm in 35mm format). In addition, improved camera shake detection accuracy and optimal mechanical design realize a powerful 5.5-stop image stabilization mechanism.
FUJINON Lens XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR Product Features
The highest optical performance of the XF lens
- The XF lens has the longest focal length of any prime lens in the XF lens lineup, with a super telephoto focal length of 500mm (equivalent to 762mm in 35mm format) and a bright F5.6 aperture. It is said to be useful for photographing sports, as well as birds, wildlife, and aircraft.
- When combined with a teleconverter, the focal length of the lens can be further extended. The Fujinon Teleconverter XF1.4X TC WR achieves a maximum focal length equivalent to 700mm (equivalent to 1067mm in 35mm format), while the Fujinon Teleconverter XF2X TC WR achieves a maximum focal length equivalent to 1000mm (equivalent to 1524mm in 35mm format).
- The lens is made up of 21 elements in 14 groups, including two Super ED lenses and five ED lenses. It suppresses the chromatic aberration that is unique to super telephoto lenses, achieving high resolution performance. It is capable of depicting an amount of information that exceeds what the naked eye can see, which is unique to super telephoto lenses, without any loss.
High mobility and excellent resolution performance
- Lens designed precisely to achieve a compact and lightweight design with a weight of approximately 1,335g
- Focal length equivalent to 762mm in 35mm equivalent.
- F/5.6 iris
- Optimal arrangement of ED and Super ED lenses suppresses chromatic aberration that tends to occur in telephoto lenses, achieving both high mobility and excellent resolution performance.
- Weight balance cuts down on strain and handling issues.
- The lens barrel sealed in 20 places. Dustproof, weatherproof, and freezeproof down to -10°C.
- In addition, the front lens element is fluorine-coated to make it water-repellent and dirt-resistant. It can be used safely even for long periods of shooting in bad weather.
Demonstrates powerful 5.5-stop image stabilization performance
- Improved camera shake sensing accuracy and optimal mechanical design have resulted in a 5.5-stop image stabilization mechanism, allowing users to comfortably enjoy handheld shooting in the telephoto range, which is susceptible to the effects of camera shake.
Comfortable operability and fast, quiet, and highly accurate autofocus
- The adoption of the inner focus system has made the focus lens smaller and lighter.
- High-speed linear motor drives the focus group,
- Fast and quiet AF in as little as 0.33 seconds.
- Photographs quickly and accurately in telephoto setting
- High-speed linear motor drives the focus group,
- Equipped with a focus preset function
- Instantly move the focus to a preset position by pressing the SET button.
- Reduces the operational burden when shooting, as there is no need to readjust the focus to the desired subject.
- Lens equipped with a focus limiter function that limits the lens operating range when focusing. This shortens the lens operating time when shooting a subject more than 5m away, achieving high-speed AF.
- The Focus Control Button is located at the tip of the lens barrel. You can instantly access the function assigned to the AF-L/AF-ON/PRESET on the Focus Select Switch, enabling smooth AF operation.
