DJI announced the new DJI RS 5, a lightweight camera stabilizer for professionals.
The latest addition to the Ronin series, DJI RS 5, expands the possibilities for solo videographers with enhanced subject tracking, improved stability and control mechanisms, and longer battery life, bringing videographers to the next level of flexibility, creativity, and control.
What is the DJI RS 5?
Upgraded smart tracking and stable operation
The latest version of the RS Smart Tracking Module, first introduced with the RS 4 Mini, adds a host of exciting features: The new RS Enhanced Smart Tracking Module allows videographers to frame and track subjects live on the gimbal’s touch screen.

The new module can also track non-human subjects, such as cars and pets. If the subject is a human, it can maintain focus from up to 10 meters away, making shooting in crowded environments a breeze. Even if the subject moves out of frame, the module can easily re-detect the subject, allowing for efficient shooting.

The module attaches quickly magnetically without the need for adapters or other accessories, making it easy for videographers of all experience levels to achieve complex camera movements such as surround shots, reverse tracking, and single-person fixed camera tracking.

DJI RS 5 employs the fifth-generation RS stabilization algorithm, increasing maximum motor torque by 50%, providing better stability in fast-moving scenes, such as when the videographer is walking or running, or when the camera is moving vigorously or switching angles quickly. Stability has also been significantly improved in portrait orientation.

Despite its compact body weighing just 1.46 kg including the battery grip and quick-release plate, DJI RS 5 can support a maximum payload of 3 kg, accommodate a wide range of mainstream mirrorless camera and lens combinations, and can switch to portrait orientation without any additional accessories, providing the flexibility to meet the diverse needs of videographers.

Unleash your creativity without limits
With new features that unlock creative perspectives and a battery life that supports extended shooting times, the RS 5 makes it easier to capture the perfect shot.
The new Electronic Briefcase Handle creates stunning camera angles from above or below your subject, while also allowing you to control your footage from the handle. The ergonomic grip and convenient placement of the joystick and buttons allow for one-handed operation.

This increased control also reduces wrist fatigue, and a new on-screen Z-axis indicator helps videographers adjust their stride length and pace to reduce camera shake, resulting in a steadier, more professional shot.

The RS 5 can be fully charged in just one hour, with 60% improved charging efficiency compared to the RS 4. The standard battery provides 14 hours of battery life for extended shoots. The new, more powerful BG70 high-capacity battery grip extends the RS 5’s battery life to 30 hours, reducing downtime and wasted time waiting for power.

DJI has also expanded the range of cameras that can be controlled wirelessly, with the RS 5 now supporting Bluetooth shutter functionality with Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras, in addition to the previously supported Sony, Canon, and Nikon cameras.

New fine-tuning knobs on each axis arm, combined with a Teflon interlayer, allow for precise balancing of camera mounts, allowing DJI RS 5 to smoothly and efficiently balance even heavy professional filmmaking equipment.
Greater efficiency with the DJI ecosystem
In addition to the new features, the RS 5 also incorporates the trusted features found in DJI’s flagship stabilizers.
- Second-generation Auto Axis Lock automatically unlocks the gimbal when powered on, ensuring creators are ready to shoot immediately. Similarly, the gimbal instantly locks when powered off or enters sleep mode.
- Native support for 3rd generation portrait orientation allows videographers to instantly switch to portrait mode

DJI RS 5 is also compatible with DJI’s comprehensive product ecosystem. Paired with two DJI Focus Pro motors, DJI RS 5 allows users to adjust zoom with a joystick and focus with a dial wheel, meeting a wide range of videographer needs. Furthermore, when used in conjunction with DJI SDR Transmission, it enables high-definition live streaming, remote control of gimbals and cameras, and creates opportunities for collaborative filming between various teams.

To meet the diverse needs of each creator, the RSA communications port can be connected to an Electronic Briefcase Handle, RS Tether Control Handle, or a third-party ring handle. This allows videographers mixing and matching to their vision. The open RS SDK also allows third-party developers to build custom features for DJI RS 5. This expands the filming possibilities to almost limitless.
