TLS (True Lens Services), a team of lens specialists based in the heart of the UK, announced the Vega65, a large-format cinema lens system. This fully in-house designed, developed, and manufactured model is a new generation of lens series that combines modern imaging performance with distinctive character.
The origins of the Vega series date back to the first TLS Vega lens, launched in 2017. Born from years of rehousing technology and collaboration with filmmakers, this series marked a turning point for TLS as it embarked on full-scale development of in-house designed lenses. The philosophy of combining compatibility with modern sensor performance with imaging character, consistency, and uncompromising mechanical precision, carried over to the Vega 65.
The Vega65 is a lens system developed from conception to design and manufacturing by the TLS design team. From material selection to manufacturing precision and structural design, every process was designed with performance as the top priority, and each lens is meticulously crafted by skilled engineers with many years of experience.
TLS Vega65 sensor compatibility and scale
The optical design employs a large format design specifically for the 65mm format, achieving true 65mm sensor coverage compatible with the latest generation of large format cameras. Consistent imaging characteristics come maintained across all focal lengths, ensuring uniformity in image creation across lenses. The imaging characteristics, with their gentle falloff, natural separation, and cinematic sense of scale, enable stable image expression from wide shots to close-ups.
It also features low-light resistance thanks to its bright maximum aperture, and control of contrast and depth of field across the entire frame, and its high close-up shooting performance means that the approach to the subject itself are a part of creative expression.
Lightweight and compact design
The housing design is compact and well-balanced for a 65-format lens system, with a focus on portability and practicality on-site. The system consists of nine focal lengths ranging from 24mm to 165mm, and all lenses have the same focus and iris gear positions. This allows for quick lens changes and seamless operation.
Expandable system design
The Vega65 also features a modular design designed for long-term use. Existing Vega FF (full-frame) sets can be converted to Vega65 specifications with a dedicated upgrade kit, and Vega65 lenses can also be converted back to full-frame specifications with an additional kit. This allows for a system configuration that can accommodate both current production environments and future large-format environments.
All TLS Vega65 lenses come engraved with a star symbol, which serves as the series signature, symbolizing consistency of design philosophy, engineering quality, and reliability in the field.
