ZEISS announced the Aatma full-frame prime lenses. Comprising nine high-end full-frame T1.5 cinema prime lenses (18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 65mm, 85mm, 100mm, and 135mm), these new lenses are designed to combine the benefits of modern optical design with the nostalgic imaging characteristics popular today. Inspired by beloved ZEISS lenses of the 20th century, Aatma combines emotionally charged imaging with the mechanical reliability, data integrity, and workflow compatibility required in modern production environments.

“With Aatma, we wanted to offer cinematographers an expressive and unique option within the ZEISS product lineup,” Jean-Fré Fashon, Senior Product Manager, Cinema Division at ZEISS, said. “Over the years, we’ve recognized that some of our legacy lens lines are still highly prized, but rather than simply recreating them, we focused on their most appealing features and used them as inspiration to incorporate into new optical designs.”
What is the ZEISS Aatma?
Reminiscent of classic ZEISS lenses
The name “Aatma” comes from the Sanskrit word for “inner essence,” “self,” or “soul.” It’s fitting, then, that ZEISS Aatma lenses are designed to evoke emotion while maintaining consistency across a set. Their imaging characteristics evoke classic ZEISS optics, offering soft skin tones with reduced contrast, smooth and vibrant focus transitions during flat focus transitions, and rich bokeh with a subtle soap bubble effect. This carefully crafted aesthetic allows cinematographers to achieve a blend of nostalgia and sophistication that supports storytelling without sacrificing control and fidelity.
ZEISS Aatma lenses strike a balance between individuality and versatility, creating organic, emotive images while adapting to a wide range of filmmaking applications. Their rendering enhances texture and atmosphere, allowing filmmakers to infuse each frame with their own unique personality while maintaining the precision required for modern productions.
Consistent ergonomics for modern workflows
While Aatma’s optical design is inspired by the past, its mechanical design reflects ZEISS’s modern high-end cinema lens standards: the lens maintains the proven shape, size, weight and handling of ZEISS’ current premium cinema lenses.
Fashon: Given the widespread positive feedback on the ergonomic design, we didn’t need to recreate existing reliability, but instead focused on making that known reliability work seamlessly with Aatma’s optical design.
Like all modern high-end ZEISS cinema lenses, Aatma is equipped with ZEISS eXtended Data (XD) technology and is fully integrated into the ZEISS CinCraft ecosystem, supporting efficient workflows in visual effects, camera tracking and virtual production.

After filming was completed, Pascal Marin commented:
“For ‘Welcoming Grace,’ I used four Aatma lenses in different focal lengths, which rendered skin tones softer and more beautifully. I particularly liked the way they rendered natural out-of-focus effects. They have a unique character that sets them apart from other modern ZEISS lenses, while still maintaining the renowned reliability and ease of use.”
