PRONEWS AWARD 2024 / Vol.00
Looking back at the film industry in 2024 with the “PRONEWS AWARD”
With only a few days left in 2024, the annual end-of-year PRONEWS AWARD season has arrived.
Let’s take a look back at the movements of the video industry this year and introduce the highlights of 2024.
Most glaring in industry news, this was the year that Nikon acquired RED. Furthermore, at the recent Inter BEE 2024, Fujifilm announced its entry into the cinema camera market, making it a year that was full of topics for the imaging industry.
Well, what was most impressive in the camera industry in 2024 was the succession of cinema cameras and mirrorless cameras equipped with innovative technology. Although the compact digital camera market has shrunk due to the spread of smartphones, the market for professional cinema cameras and mirrorless cameras has boomed.
Many new products, such as Sony’s Cinema Line series “BURANO”, Canon’s “EOS C400”, and mirrorless cameras such as Canon’s “EOS R1” and Sony’s “a1 II”, have been making waves in the market. In response to this trend, the “PRONEWS AWARD” decided to separate the “Camera Division” into a “Cinema Camera Division” and a “Camcorder/Mirrorless Camera Division” and select the winners.
In the imaging industry as a whole, this year was a year in which the presence of Chinese manufacturers stood out. Accessory makers SmallRIG and Hollyland, LED makers NANLITE and Aputure/amaran, and lens maker LAOWA all made great strides. SmallRIG in particular has been releasing new products one after another, and its development speed has attracted attention within the industry. It is certain that the influence of Chinese manufacturers will continue to grow in the future.
AV to IT Gear
The evolution from “AV equipment” to “IT equipment” has also accelerated. A trend reminiscent of the transition from the old “linear editing” to “non-linear editing” is emerging. Amidst this, the SMPTE-2110 IP video products announced by Blackmagic Design in April are groundbreaking products that bring new possibilities to the 2110 IP video environment, which is expected to become more widespread in the future. This technology will pave the way for the future of the industry, and Blackmagic Design looks set to be a leader in this technology.
The year 2024 was a year of change, full of much talk in the video industry. Through the PRONEWS AWARD, we will summarise the past year and suggest guidelines for the future.
