Technology exchange exhibition “GEAR EXPO TOKYO 2023”
The Japan Society of Cinematographers (JSC) and the Japan Motion Picture and Television Lighting Society (JSL) held the technical exchange exhibition “GEAR EXPO TOKYO 2023” for two days from January 21st to January 21st, 2023.
The venue was Toei Tokyo Studio Toho Studio 6st in Nerima, Tokyo. A feature of GEAR EXPO TOKYO is the practical workshop, where an actual set was built at the venue to reproduce the filming scene and provide commentary from the on-site perspective. In addition, the booths of camera, lens manufacturers, and lighting equipment manufacturers increased from the first time. The event was a success, and the turnout was very great.
Interview with Mr. Kenjiro So / Mr. Shunsuke Ito
On behalf of the event organizers, we interviewed Mr. Kenjiro So (JSL) and Mr. Shunsuke Ito (JSC/JSL) (video in Japanese).
Exhibition of FalconEyes-S series studio lights and prefabricated sunshade panels
The S series LED lights, which are designed to be quiet, have a lineup of 200W/300W/600W. You can control the amount of light, color temperature, and color cast from the smartphone app. I actually listened to the sound of the fan, but it was very quiet.
The sunshade panel is lightweight and compact and can be assembled immediately. The larger the reflector, the more difficult it is to assemble, but you can focus on shooting smoothly without stress. There are two types of sizes, so you can consider according to the shooting environment.
Exhibiting new Apture card-type panel LED products and digital slates
The card-type panel LED “MC PRO” is palm-sized, but has 30% more light than the previous model, and comes with a magnetic grid, increasing shooting variations. The release date and price are undecided, but it is scheduled to be released by April 2023.
DEITY’s digital slate “TC-SL1”, equipped with timecode input and output, is easy to see even in dark places, and enables smooth shooting without the need for lighting.
Focus on NANLITE-NANLUX brand studio lights
“Evoke 1200B” is a studio light that can be used outdoors without being affected by the environment, such as rain or snow, thanks to the waterproof standard IP54 and 1200W high output LED. By attaching a Fresnel lens (sold separately), the beam angle can be adjusted from spot to flood. “Dyno 1200C” is a 1200W LED panel light that supports RGB settings. Three Dyno 1200C lights were also used at the GEAR EXPO workshop event. It is quite noticeable that the situation of morning and night can be expressed with one unit.
disguise – Demonstrating in-camera VFX and augmented reality solutions
Disguise, which was exhibiting for the first time, showed off an augmented reality (xR) solution. The outside of the LED can be supplemented with real-time rendered CG. By supplementing the area that cannot be covered by LED with CG, it becomes possible to cover a wider image than the stage.
Exhibiting Prolycht/Tokina-LED lights with 6-color light engine and Vista series prime lenses
The Orion675FS features RGBACL LED hyperlight technology that mixes six different color channels to create a white color, enabling a wide range of color temperatures from 1200K to 20000K. Since the output can be adjusted in 0.1% increments, fine adjustment is possible. Glass is mounted in front of the LED element, making it possible to create a light source that is easy to blend in with the color.
For Tokina brand cinema lenses, the VISTA series for full frame and the zoom lens series for Super 35 were exhibited. The 180mm T1.9 Vista Prime, which was newly added to the lineup in 2022, is also being exhibited, It was getting a lot of attention.
