A new model with 6K sensors, a rolling shutter, and enhanced frame rate and dynamic range performance
RED DIGITAL CINEMA announced the new compact cinema camera “KOMODO-X,” equipped with a 6K global shutter.
KOMODO-X is offering a beta version of the limited production White Stormtrooper color through RED.com or authorized RED stores (Japanese distributor RAID’s suggested retail price is 1,754,500 yen including tax). The black product version KOMODO-X is scheduled to be the same price after the stormtrooper beta program ends. The KOMODO-X black product version will be sold as an option for pre-bundled starter packs or production packs.
KOMODO-X is equipped with a 6K S35 global shutter sensor, improving the image performance of KOMODO’s reputation. This new camera comes with a standardized 6K80P and 4K120P resolution settings by improving low-light performance and doubling the frame rate. This camera has the capability of being an even more powerful tool in cinematography.
KOMODO-X has been improved to seamlessly integrate into any business workflow while maintaining a small KOMODO form factor of 129mmx101mmx95mm and approximately 1.2kg. New I/O features 12G SDI, full size DC-IN, USB Type-C and locking audio connectors with phantom power. A built-in 2.9-inch LCD enables simple operation and image preview, and for precise monitoring, KOMODO-X also supports a direct-mount DSMC3 7-inch touch LCD.
In addition, it shares many functions with the lineup of the flagship DSMC3, such as compatibility with CFexpress, built-in MICRO V-Lock power plate, and enhanced RF lens mount. The new Micro V-Lock power option allows direct installation of commercial Micro V-Lock batteries without the need for an adapter. By adding compatibility with the upcoming RED PRO I/O module, it will offer an auxiliary power output and full-size battery compatibility. This new module will be available with the launch of KOMODO-X’s production black version V-Lock or gold mount version.
KOMODO-X’s reinforced RF lens mount with locking mechanism provides the stability and rigidity that professionals need while maintaining the flexibility to switch between multiple lens mount types without tools. KOMODO-X is fully compatible with /i PL lenses using the RED RF to PL adapter.
Additionally, KOMODO-X can provide a robust platform for photographers with IP-based workflows. Built-in USB Type-C connection and Wi-Fi, remote control of the camera using the mobile application “RED Control” and macOS and iPad compatible application “RED Control Pro”, IP media offload using FTPS , and in-camera cloud upload functions.
KOMODO-X also supports frame-accurate PTP sync and tri-level genlock sensor sync with on-the-fly offset, supporting multi-camera LED volume production.
KOMODO-X supports RED Connect, a licensed feature that enables live broadcasting of 6K images directly from the camera via IP. It is said that RED’s cinematic image is being extended to new uses.
RED also announced the new KOMODO-X system and several new accessories that are compatible with RED’s other cameras. The RED Compact Top Handle offers a compact handle solution for KOMODO-X users.
RED KOMODO and V-RAPTOR RF to PL with Electronic ND Filter Adapter Packs are compatible with the KOMODO system or V-RAPTOR and integrate the same electronic ND controls used in the V-RAPTOR XL into a robust PL mounting solution are doing.
RED President Jarred Land commented:
We are thrilled to welcome KOMODO-X to our new line of RED cameras, joining the original KOMODO and the rest of the DSMC3 family. Global shutter, increased framerate, improved audio and power infrastructure make KOMODO-X a new all-rounder that fills the much-needed gap in the lineup between 6K KOMODO and the mighty 8K V-RAPTOR.
RED Executive Vice President Tommy Rios said:
We look forward to sharing the groundbreaking KOMODO-X with our community of filmmakers and partners. This new addition to the KOMODO family is available worldwide through our network of premium retailers and rental homes, or through RED.com. KOMODO-X, V-RAPTOR, V-RAPTOR XL, and KOMODO are an incredibly powerful and versatile line-up for filmmakers, and we can’t wait to see what the community of RED users continue to create with them.
