Canon announced release of the RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM ultra-wide-angle zoom lens as a new product in the “RF lens” interchangeable lens series for the “EOS R system.” This lens is due out in late February 2025.
The RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM is an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens in the same series as the RF28-70mm F2.8 IS STM (released in September 2024), which combines excellent portability thanks to its compact and lightweight design with high image quality approaching that of an L lens. For both still images and videos, you can enjoy creating works that take advantage of the strong perspective and the angle of view unique to ultra-wide angles.
Canon RF16-28mm F2.8 Key Features
An ultra-wide-angle zoom lens with an aperture value of F2.8 across the entire zoom range and a compact, lightweight design for excellent portability
By making the IS (image stabilization) unit more compact, adopting a retractable structure, and utilizing the camera’s electronic distortion correction, we have achieved an aperture value of F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, while also achieving a compact, lightweight design with a total length of approximately 91.0 mm (when stored) and a weight of approximately 445 g.
In addition to its excellent portability, the ultra-wide-angle zoom range of focal lengths from 16mm to 28mm enables users to take advantage of dynamic perspective when shooting in confined spaces or buildings, or when capturing wide shots of vast landscapes.
Natural and beautiful bokeh and high image quality approaching that of L lenses
The maximum aperture of F2.8 across the entire zoom range allows you to take advantage of natural and beautiful bokeh effects. In addition, the optical design of 13 groups and 16 elements, including two aspherical lenses and four UD lenses, such as the placement of a large-diameter replica aspherical lens at the very front, reduces various aberrations that cause image degradation, achieving high image quality across the entire screen that approaches that of an L lens.
Comfortable shooting thanks to STM and image stabilization
The lead screw type STM realizes not only high speed and high precision AF when shooting still images, but also quiet and smooth AF when shooting videos. In addition, the in-lens optical image stabilization mechanism achieves 5.5 stops, and when combined with an EOS R series camera equipped with an in-body image stabilization mechanism, cooperative control is achieved, achieving image stabilization effects of 8.0 stops in the center and 7.5 stops on the periphery.
In addition, this lens also supports peripheral cooperative control, which improves the blurring that is unique to wide-angle images, allowing for comfortable shooting even in situations where camera shake is likely to occur, such as handheld shooting.
