Leica released the Leica Summilux-M f1.4/50mm from the classic Leica M lens reproduction series from Saturday, March 1, 2025.
The original Leica Summilux-M f1.4/50mm was released in 1959 as the first lens in the Summilux series. The name comes from the Latin “summa lux,” which means “greatest light,” and since the release of the original Leica Summilux-M f1.4/50mm, it has become synonymous with extremely bright lenses with maximum apertures of F1.4 to F1.7.
The new Summilux-M f1.4/50mm is a reproduction that reinterprets the classic look of the past by combining it with cutting-edge technology, and is the fifth lens in the Classic Series.

Like the four lenses already released, the Leica Summaron-M f5.6/28mm, Leica Thambar-M f2.2/90mm, Leica Noctilux-M f1.2/50mm ASPH., and Leica Summilux-M f1.4/35mm, this lens produces images with a timeless beauty reminiscent of the original old lenses that have made their mark on history.
The reproduction “Summilux-M f1.4/50mm” is based on the optical calculations and design of the second-generation “Leica Summilux-M f1.4/50mm,” which was manufactured between 1962 and 2004, and is a nearly identical reproduction.
As a result, it boasts the same outstanding performance as the second generation, and is capable of producing excellent images even at full aperture. At full aperture, it produces very soft and beautiful bokeh, and its unique depiction is ideal for portrait photography.
On the other hand, when stopped down, the image is sharper and has higher contrast than the original. This is possible thanks to cutting-edge manufacturing techniques and a special type of glass. Moreover, the reissued Summilux-M f1.4/50mm meets all the requirements for use in modern M-type cameras with high-resolution image sensors. The minimum focusing distance is 0.7m, shorter than the original, allowing you to enjoy even more creative freedom.

Made in Germany
The reissued “Leica Summilux-M f1.4/50mm” is “Made in Germany” like all Leica M lenses, and is worthy of the name of Leica lenses, which are known worldwide for their high quality. It is handcrafted from solid brass and comes with a high-quality round lens hood that gives it a vintage look. It combines an attractive classic design with a high-quality, high-precision mechanism.
The reissued Leica Summilux-M f1.4/50mm is the first Leica lens to feature a redesigned product packaging. The new packaging box is manufactured in Germany, is of high quality, and does not contain any plastic in consideration of the environment.
