Cosina Corporation announced the release of the Voigtlander brand full-frame standard lens “SEPTON 40mm F2 Aspherical” for Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount. The E-mount version release is scheduled in March 2026, and the Z-mount version in April 2026.
What is the Voigtlander SEPTON 40mm F2 Aspherical?
SEPTON is the name given to the standard lens developed for the Bessamatic and Ultramatic lens-shutter SLR cameras, which were sold from the late 1950s to the 1960s as a new photography platform to replace rangefinder cameras. The SEPTON is a lens that further improved optical performance by adding one lens to the six-element structure of the Ultron, which was released for rangefinder cameras in 1950, and is known as one of Voigtländer’s signature lenses.
The SEPTON 40mm F2 Aspherical E-mount/Z-mount is a compact, pancake-type standard lens that’s a perfect match for mirrorless cameras. Optimized for full-frame Sony E-mount sensors, it features a six-element Ortho-Metar lens with an additional aspherical element, achieving a bright F2 aperture while maintaining the benefits of the Ortho-Metar lens, which allows for a compact optical system.

For E-mount

Orthometar Type
The Orthometar type, which is also widely used in enlargement lenses, has a characteristic of having extremely little distortion, making it a lens that can depict straight line motifs without any noticeable distortion.
The compact 30mm overall length from the mount makes it easy to carry around and take in and out of a bag. The 40mm angle of view, while able as a semi-wide-angle lens, makes it suitable for everyday use. The minimum focusing distance of 0.3m makes it ideal for tabletop photography.
It comes with a dome-shaped metal screw-on hood that maintains its compact size. Lens hood measures at a φ52mm thread on its outer periphery, so the same front cap works with or without the hood.
Both models come equipped with electronic contacts and support the following functions for each mount:
- For E-mount: In addition to recording Exif information for shooting data, a built-in distance encoder supports 5-axis in-body image stabilization. The viewfinder enlarges through the focus ring. The aperture ring has 1/3-stop clicks.
- For Z mount: In addition to Exif information recording and in-body image stabilization (3-axis), when combined with a telecommunications-compatible body, it supports three types of focusing support functions (focus point frame color change, peaking, and magnification button).
