Avid and FilmLight have announced a strategic partnership to natively integrate Baselight’s color technology into Avid Media Composer. The two companies aim to create a workflow that more closely connects editing and color grading, ensuring consistent color information and creative intent from dailies to finishing and delivery.
Media Composer has been used for film and television editing for many years, while Baselight is widely used for high-end color grading and finishing. This partnership goes beyond the traditional plugin-based workflow, more deeply integrating FilmLight’s color technology into the Media Composer editing environment.
Rich Camp, Media Composer Product Manager at Avid, commented as follows:
“This partnership reflects how our products are actually being used by specialists who collaborate to create the world’s most compelling movies and television content.”
“By deeply integrating FilmLight’s expertise into the Media Composer workflow, editors can access powerful color tools directly on the Media Composer timeline. This allows for more seamless collaboration with colorists and enables them to dedicate more time and focus to what matters most: the story.”
Steve Chapman, co-founder of FilmLight, commented as follows:
“FilmLight has always focused on developing color tools that seamlessly integrate into post-production workflows. By collaborating with Avid, we can combine the strengths of both companies to bring a new level of color expression and precision to the editing environment.”
Avid and Filmlight – new approach to integrating editing and color.
Through this partnership, Avid and FilmLight aim to more deeply integrate color into the Media Composer editing environment, creating a workflow that allows color information to be carried over throughout the entire production process. Development will focus primarily on the following four areas:
- Native color within Media Composer: Deeply integrate Baselight’s color capabilities into Media Composer, allowing color to be treated as part of the editing workflow rather than a separate process performed after editing is complete.
- A color pipeline that connects dailies to final delivery: Maintaining a shared and consistent color decision-making process throughout the production stage, seamlessly connecting editing, review, grading, and finishing.
- Bringing professional color science to the editing environment: Making FilmLight’s color technology available to a wide range of Media Composer users while maintaining the precision and control that professional colorists and finishing teams need in Baselight.
- Enhanced online and delivery capabilities: Allows for scalability according to production scale and use, from workflows that complete delivery within Media Composer to workflows that allow for back-and-forth between full Baselight and rendering without rendering when advanced finishing is required.
Avid and Filmlight Goals for Partnership
The goal of both companies is to create a workflow that seamlessly integrates color information from the initial stages of production to final delivery, rather than treating editing and color as separate processes connected by export, rendering, and conforming. This will allow editors to more accurately visualize the final look as they edit, and colorists to share creative decisions between the Media Composer editing environment and the Baselight finishing environment.
This initiative is based on the plugin-based workflow currently offered in “Baselight Editions.” Moving forward, the goal is to further integrate FilmLight’s color science and tools natively into the Media Composer editing environment, creating a color environment that can be scaled according to production needs, from editing to online delivery.
Collaboration between the two companies from the perspective of post-production
Post-production facilities that have been using Media Composer and Baselight in their actual productions for many years are also excited about this partnership.
Jai Cave, Technical Operations Director at ENVY Post Production, commented:
“Media Composer and Baselight have been at the heart of our workflow for over 20 years at ENVY Post Production, where we have produced films such as “The Traitors,” “At Home with the Furys,” and “The Grand Tour.” So I am pleased that these two companies will continue to work even more closely together and play a vital role in the industry.”
“Production workflows continue to evolve, and as project formats become increasingly complex, there is a growing need to maintain consistent color grading from on-set decisions through editing, VFX, and finishing. Closer collaboration between editing and color grading can bring tangible workflow benefits to creative teams. We look forward to seeing how Avid and FilmLight will realize this vision.”
