System5 Initiatives for SDGs
Sustainable Development Goals are abbreviated as “SDGs,” and it is an initiative by the UN for a sustainable future. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in September 2015 with the participation of over 150 member states. These are the stated international goals from 2016 to 2030.
Aiming to realize a sustainable world and enable all people to enjoy peace and abundance, the “17 goals for changing the world” and 169 targets have been set. System5 is committed to leaving no one behind with Sustainable Development Goals.
System5 SDGs Declaration
- System5 supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through SDGs, and will engage in business activities to achieve it.
- System5 strives to innovate its business, management, and organization while responding to the voices of its employees and customers through the provision of its products and services.
- Through our business activities, System5 earnestly addresses the various issues facing the world and contributes to the realization of a sustainable society.
Creating a healthy and safe society
In addition to conducting regular health checkups as required by law, System5 also conducts stress checks that allow employees to check their own mental health status, in an effort to ensure that they can work in good physical and mental health. For employees with health concerns, we provide appropriate care in conjunction with industrial physicians, promote the creation of a work environment that takes safety and health into consideration, and prevent unfortunate accidents and illnesses caused by business activities.
Target
3.4…By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment, and promote mental health and well-being.
3.9 By 2030, significantly reduce the number of deaths and illnesses caused by hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution
Provide learning opportunities that help improve skills
It is extremely difficult to learn techniques that require specialized knowledge to use, such as editing software, cameras, and drones, on your own, but going to school to learn them tends to be a significant time and financial burden. System5 regularly holds seminars and events that are useful not only for those who currently make a living in video production, but also for those starting a business, amateurs, and students, meeting this and other SDGs.
Target
4.3 By 2030, ensure that all people, regardless of gender, have equal access to affordable and quality technical, vocational and higher education, including university and university education
4.4 By 2030, significantly increase the proportion of young people and adults with the skills necessary for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship, including technical and vocational skills
Promote gender-equal employment and evaluation
Our company employs all employees regardless of their gender, male or female, or LGBTQ+, and after joining the company, we will fairly evaluate them based on their contribution. We will eliminate all forms of discrimination in work content, salary systems, appointment to executive positions, and all other business activities, and along with measures to prevent harassment, we will create an environment where all employees can work in their own way.
In fact, our female employees are active in a wide range of positions, from the general public to executive positions, and 47% of our employees are women. We provide full support not only for taking maternity and childcare leave, but also for returning to work. In particular, the use of telework has increased the number of employees, both male and female, who are able to work while raising children. As of December 2022, the ratio of women in executive positions is still low at 33%. We have made correcting the gender ratio an urgent issue and will also take on the challenge of reviewing our organizational structure. System5 takes pride in meeting gender equality SDGs by raising up our female workforce to be leaders.
In addition, in order to ensure a fair division of roles in matters such as childcare and nursing care at home, we are not only promoting the creation of a system that allows employees to take time off and working shorter hours with peace of mind, but also utilizing telework to enable employees to work under any circumstances. We will also promote the construction of an environment as a BCP measure so that business operations can continue.
Target
5.1…Eliminate all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.
5.4 Recognize and value unpaid childcare, caregiving and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social security policies, and the sharing of responsibilities within households and families according to national circumstances.
5.5…Ensure the full and effective participation of women and equal leadership opportunities at all levels of decision-making in the political, economic and public spheres.
5.b…Strengthen the use of enabling technologies, including ICT, to promote women’s empowerment.
Strengthen sales of LED lighting equipment
Among the products we handle are many lighting equipment that are essential for video production. A major issue with lighting equipment is that it requires more power in proportion to its brightness. System5 meets SDGs by being conscientious of our electricity usage.
Recently, lighting equipment using LEDs has been released by various manufacturers, and the range of types is expanding. We actively recommend LED-based products to customers who are considering lighting equipment. While ensuring sufficient brightness, lower power consumption reduces the number of batteries carried, which not only increases the share of renewable energy in Japan, but also benefits customers by reducing the weight of their luggage. there is.
Target
7.2 By 2030, significantly increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.
7.3 By 2030, double the rate of improvement in global energy efficiency.
Grow our business while reducing overtime work
The increase in overtime work has many negative factors for employees, such as increased fatigue, decreased motivation, and links to family discord. As part of our work style reform, we have repeatedly reviewed our labor management with the aim of eliminating overtime work so that employees can maintain a balance between on- and off-duty work and perform their duties with maximum efficiency within their working hours.
Recently, with the introduction of telework, it has become possible to work without coming to the office, so there have been concerns about so-called “hidden overtime” in which work is done outside of regular business hours. We are working to educate the company so that by managing employees, they can live a balanced life both on and off duty without having to worry about such concerns.
Improving the rate of paid leave taken is also an issue that must be addressed. In order to allow employees to take paid leave freely and without worrying about anyone else, we will not only review team composition and work content, but also increase the number of tasks that can be automated using RPA (Robotic Process Automation). Our System5 SDGs initiatives are such as:
Target
8.5 By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all men and women, including young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for equal work.
8.8…Protect the rights of all workers and promote safe and secure working conditions, including migrant workers, especially female migrant workers and workers in precarious employment.
Generating innovation in new markets
With the advent of drones, anyone can now easily enjoy aerial photography, but industrial drones were still in their infancy in 2014. Convinced that drones would be used in a variety of fields beyond the framework of video production, such as forestry, agriculture, inspection, and logistics, we launched a business to develop industrial drones even though there was no market for them.
Since then, as the market has gradually formed, new ways to utilize drones have increased, and various types of drones are actually starting to perform tasks in place of humans.
Currently, our company is the official primary sales agent of the world’s largest drone manufacturerDJI, and is working to promote the spread of industrial drones in Japan. We are strongly promoting initiatives to achieve this goal. Industrial drones not only lead to more efficient and labor-saving work regardless of industry or type of business, but also prevent accidents and ensure safety by entrusting dangerous tasks that previously had to be handled by humans to drones. This will lead to this. Drones protect the country and people’s lives and support logistics. We are working on our business with the aim of creating value in a society that is predicated on drones.
Target
9.4 By 2030, improve sustainability through improved infrastructure and industry through improved resource use efficiency and expanded adoption of clean and environmentally friendly technologies and industrial processes All countries will take action according to their capabilities.
Developing promising human resources without discrimination
Our recruitment selection criteria does not include any restrictions on gender, age, race, nationality, ideology, or beliefs. We are actively hiring people who agree with our management philosophy and who are able to improve business performance and contribute to society with sufficient work execution skills.
In terms of treatment, we will clearly establish salary tables and evaluation/appraisal standards, and promote stronger governance to prevent unequal pay due to the arbitrary or biased opinions of evaluators.
Target
10.2 By 2030, the empowerment and social, economic and political inclusion of all people, regardless of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status, promote.
10.4…Introduce policies, including tax, wage and social security policies, to progressively achieve greater equality.
Providing housing allowances and promoting telework
The cost of housing, which is the basis of life, is rising every year, and it is a heavy burden. Our company provides housing allowances depending on the living environment. Reducing housing costs not only gives you more leeway in your life, but also expands your options for living areas and property types.
In addition, telework is actively utilized for jobs and departments whose work is primarily done on a PC. Even if you are physically far from your company, you can carry out your work without leaving your familiar city. The depopulation of rural areas due to the concentration of the population in urban areas is a very big problem for Japan, and we will continue to work on this as one of the measures to solve this problem.
Target
11.1…By 2030, ensure access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums for all
Environmentally friendly by reducing packaging materials
Many of the products we ship are precision equipment such as cameras and drones, so they must be packaged carefully to prevent them from being damaged or malfunctioning during transportation. However, cushioning materials become waste that is a nuisance for customers. Reducing the amount of buffer material used is an important issue that is directly linked to improving the natural environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, our company uses paper for cushioning materials in consideration of safety and the environment. By introducing new cushioning materials, we will continue to aim to provide services that are not only good for the environment but also for our customers.
Promoting reuse by selling used products
At our company, we purchase video equipment such as cameras and VTRs, perform maintenance and refresh work, and then sell them with a warranty period. In order to spread the idea of reusing used items, we carefully assess the market value of purchased used items and sell them at appropriate prices. Our future goal is to increase the sales volume of used products. We will continue to take proactive measures to buy used products, such as increasing the trade-in value of old equipment when purchasing new products.
In addition, we consider small secondary batteries (battery packs) used as power sources for professional video equipment to be a valuable resource, and we collect used batteries such as “lithium ion,” “nickel metal hydride,” and “nickel cadmium,” which can no longer be used. Rather than simply disposing of battery packs as industrial waste, we properly process them according to recycling mechanisms, contributing to environmental protection and resource conservation.
Target
12.2 By 2030, achieve sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.
12.5 By 2030, significantly reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.
Promote paperless and cloud computing
From 2020, the PCs used at our company are basically notebook (laptop) type. Bring your own PC to the meeting, and display materials only on the screen, and avoid printing as much as possible. Faxes received on multifunction devices can be viewed as data, eliminating paper waste. Through these measures, we are promoting a reduction in the amount of copy paper used.
The number of in-house servers is decreasing year by year due to the use of cloud services. We will reduce power consumption for air conditioning in server rooms and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (Co2) emissions. In the future, we aim to move all business use services to the cloud, and we will further strengthen not only eco-friendliness but also security performance.
Target
15.2…By 2020, promote the sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and significantly increase afforestation and reforestation worldwide
15.a… Mobilize and significantly increase funding from all sources for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystems.
Promote compliance
In order to comprehensively promote compliance activities both inside and outside the company, the Compliance Committee is promoting company-wide initiatives. We aim to maintain and foster a high level of compliance awareness by conducting regular compliance training and actively utilizing the internal reporting system.

16.5…Significantly reduce all forms of corruption and bribery.
16.b Promote and implement non-discriminatory legislation and policies for sustainable development.
Promote partnership alliance
Resolving social issues cannot be achieved by System5 alone. We aim to achieve various goals by collaborating with external stakeholders, including manufacturers and agents, and bringing together their respective technologies and knowledge. In addition to business-to-business partnerships, we also collaborate with society in a wide range of ways, including open innovation and industry-government-academia collaboration, aiming to solve global social issues through our business.
