Yale University CCAM Uses Blackmagic Design products in Production
Blackmagic Design announced Yale University Center for Collaborative Arts and Media (CCAM) uses a variety of Blackmagic Design equipment for its filmmaking facilities. This includes Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro and Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K digital film cameras, Blackmagic Video Assist 12G 7″ HDR monitor/recorder, editing, grading, visual effects (VFX) and audio post production software DaVinci Resolve Studio and Blackmagic Cloud. All of these are used by faculty, staff and students.
Yale’s 5,000m2 CCAM is a multidisciplinary arts and technology center that generates creative projects and develops experimental technical workflows, many of which are based on the theory and practice of moving image.
Yale CCAM engages with the college community through studio fellowships, symposia, workshops, and other ongoing programs and events throughout the year. The curriculum brings together a variety of courses in creative disciplines across the college, including film.
How Yale CCAM Uses Blackmagic Design gear
The equipment is used throughout official programs, classes, training and is also available to borrow free of charge. Students use the equipment for their graduation and class projects to create short films, documentaries, music videos, performance recordings and cutting edge experimentation with film technology such as the Vicon Motion Capture System installed at CCAM Leeds Studio.
“Blackmagic Design cameras offer flexibility for students of all skill levels, departments and projects. Students and faculty love the compact, reliable cameras that produce cinema-quality images. They are used on a variety of projects, including feature film shoots, because of their ease of use, and the ability to use a wide range of lenses and built-in ND filters is a big plus.”
Shooting in Blackmagic RAW means DaVinci Resolve Studio’s seamless workflow and Blackmagic Cloud collaboration allow users to take full advantage of the camera’s cinematic images in post production. CCAM’s labs are also equipped with the software to document events and create short videos to showcase research projects for fundraising purposes.
Yale C-CAMP
At the beginning of each semester at Yale University, CCAM hosts C-CAMP, a one-day interdisciplinary creative workshop event taught by the CCAM team and collaborators. Past workshops have included motion capture, projection mapping and video editing. However, one of the most popular sessions at C-CAMP is the Blackmagic Design workshop, where students learn how to shoot a short documentary using Blackmagic cameras.
While Blackmagic Design products are at the heart of classes, projects and workshops, they are also used behind the scenes at CCAM. Initially, the ATEM Mini Pro live production switchers were installed to support faculty in a hybrid teaching environment as they returned from COVID-19 restrictions, but are now being used alongside Blackmagic Design cameras to capture, produce and stream a variety of CCAM events.
Blackmagic Design cameras and DaVinci Resolve Studio are used for cinematic experiments and demonstrations as well as documentaries resulting from major projects, all of which will be screened at the CCAM Symposium, and the cameras and ATEM Mini Pros are also used for multi camera shoots and live production workflows.
