Three years ago, a young filmmaker embarked on a journey into the world of video production with no prior experience. Today, his passion for storytelling and relentless determination have propelled him into the director’s chair. We had the chance to sit down with this rising talent to learn about his evolution, the challenges he’s faced, and the dreams that continue to fuel his creative fire.
Discovering a Passion for Video Production
“When I started out, I had zero experience,” he shares. “It was about two and a half, maybe three years ago, and I was just exploring different video styles. I tried corporate videos, small commercials, and content creation, but it wasn’t until I started experimenting with short documentaries that I found my calling.”
This early experimentation served as a crash course in filmmaking. Each project honed his skills and helped him better understand the art of storytelling. Documentaries, in particular, ignited his desire to delve deeper into narratives that connect with audiences on a profound level.
The Guerrilla Filmmaking Phase
Like many newcomers, his initial projects were raw and unpolished. Working under the banner of his company, Indigo Media, he dove into what he calls “guerrilla filmmaking.”
“There was no control—just a guy with a gimbal, a minimal script, and non-actors,” he laughs. “But even with those limitations, the results were surprisingly good. It was exhilarating, and I realized I wanted to push myself further. I wanted to do it right.”
Doing it “right” meant rethinking his approach. He envisioned a production with a structured script, professional actors, a dedicated cinematographer, and full creative control—a far cry from his earlier impromptu setups.
Stepping into the Director’s Role
Fast forward to his most recent project, and this filmmaker is now stepping into the director’s chair with intention and ambition.
“This is my first real attempt at directing with a small but professional crew,” he explains. “I had access to incredible tools like the Sony FX6 camera, Iron Glass rehoused cinema lenses, and even a dolly. The lenses, in particular, offered such a soft, cinematic look that contrasted beautifully with the sharp, digital aesthetic of mirrorless cameras.”
The use of this equipment wasn’t just a technical decision—it was a creative one. “Every shot was carefully planned, from slow push-ins to pans and tilts. I wanted every movement to feel deliberate, to contribute to the story.”
Japan as a Cinematic Playground
What sets this project apart is its stunning backdrop: Japan. The country provided an inspiring canvas for the film, with its unique blend of traditional and modern landscapes.
“Japan is a filmmaker’s paradise,” he says enthusiastically. “You have serene temples and traditional statues on one side, and then a full-blown neon-lit concrete jungle on the other. It’s an amazing place to create, and the locations truly elevated the production.”
He notes that the variety and accessibility of these locations not only enhanced the visual quality of the film but also offered endless inspiration for storytelling.
Dreaming Bigger
When asked about his ultimate goal, his vision is clear: scale up.
“In ten years, I hope I’ll have a 100-person crew and be working on larger-scale projects,” he says with a smile. “This is the dream. Right now, I’m just taking it one step at a time, learning and growing with every project.”
Despite his aspirations, he remains grounded, emphasizing the importance of staying focused and continuing to refine his craft.
Advice for Aspiring Filmmakers
For those looking to follow a similar path, his message is simple: start small and stay curious.
“Don’t let a lack of resources stop you,” he advises. “Experiment with different styles, surround yourself with talented people, and let your creativity drive you. Every project is a stepping stone.”
His story is a testament to the power of passion and persistence. From guerrilla filmmaking to directing with a professional crew, he’s proof that dreams can become reality with hard work and a clear vision.
