Canon will release the RC-IP1000, a controller for high-level video production such as broadcast stations and large-scale events, in mid-December 2023. Prices are open. The current market price is around $5300.
Canon RC-IP1000 Features
Touch Panel
The new feature of the Canon RC-IP1000 is the touch panel. In the past, when operating a single camera remotely, it was impossible to check the movement and angle of view of the camera being operated unless a controller and video display were at hand. Additionally, in the case of multi-camera operation, it was necessary to prepare multiple displays to check the images, to switch images using the display function, or to prepare a separate switcher.
The Canon RC-IP1000 can receive camera images directly via IP, reducing the hassle of preparing a separate monitor cable. In the case of multi-cameras, it is possible to link the camera to be operated by switching the images visible on the controller, enabling real-time operation with fewer steps.
IP images can be displayed on multiple screens such as single screen, 2×2 screen, or 3×3 screen, and can be operated by switching cameras on the touch panel or using physical buttons.
Autofocus Facial Recognition
Autofocus face recognition is possible with touch operation. Previously, setting the autofocus target required starting up a computer and using a remote camera control app to select the subject, but with the Canon RC-IP1000, various focus settings such as the face (main face/sub) and eyes can be set on the touch panel. It is possible to display a frame. In addition, even when setting manual focus, operators can adjust the focus by simply touching the area you want to focus on.
Canon RC-IP1000 Designed for Collaboration
The second feature is that it is equipped with an interface designed for external collaboration, allowing it to be linked with a switcher. Although only compatible models use the GPIO terminal, it is possible to check the switcher selection screen both on the controller side and on the video.
Equipped with 12G-SDI and HDMI output, it is possible to operate while outputting the operation screen to an external monitor. Power supply is compatible with one cable via PoE + and DC12V XLR connector. It also can be powered from a general-purpose AC adapter or V-mount battery. It is also designed to work with the same power supply unit as a cinema camera.
No external PC needed for operation
The third feature is that a PC is not required for configuration; conventional remote camera operations required starting up a computer and making various settings, but the RC-IP1000 can be controlled from a controller. From opening the box to using it, you can complete the settings using just the controller. On-site, it is possible to change the color settings, shooting settings, and shutter speed of multiple cameras without a PC.
Since cameras can be synced to the controller, cameras can be automatically searched and registered simply by connecting via LAN. For cameras that have not been initialized, it is possible to set an administrator name, password, and IP address, so you can complete the registration process without connecting the camera to a PC. It is also possible to perform initial settings for multiple cameras at once, significantly reducing setup time.
In addition, it is possible to set and execute automatic tracking and automatic loops for add-on applications from the controller, and it is also equipped with a control that allows automatic tracking to be turned off in the event that it follows someone who is not the target.
Conclusion
With the RC-IP100, the functions that could be performed using the remote control were limited compared to the camera functions, but the RC-IP1000 supports a wide range of functions worthy of its top-of-the-line name. Canon’s remote camera can be operated using a browser, and you can now choose from two types of remote camera controllers. Canon’s remote camera lineup seems to be expanding to include not only the main body but also the controller to suit different uses.
