At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2024, Adobe announced that it has integrated new generative AI capabilities powered by Adobe Firefly directly into the design and creative workflows of Adobe Substance 3D.
The beta versions of Substance 3D Sampler 4.4 and Stager 3.0, which feature the new “Texture Generation” and “Background Generation” features, will be exhibited at Substance Days at GDC 2024, which begins on March 18th (US Pacific Time), and will be demonstrated at Adobe’s Adobe Substance 3D booth. They will be available to all Adobe Substance 3D users from today onwards.
The latest release of Substance 3D introduces two new Adobe Firefly powered features:
- Substance 3D Sampler’s “Text to Texture” feature empowers creators to generate surface textures for 3D objects, ranging from simple text prompts to photorealistic to stylized textures, eliminating the need for physical prototypes, stock image selection or manual photography, significantly enhancing the creative and iterative process for artists and designers.
- The new “Generate Background” feature in Substance 3D Stager creates detailed background images from a text prompt, intelligently adjusting perspective and lighting to seamlessly composite objects into the Scene.
Combined, these new features are said to significantly accelerate the creative review process, making professional design workflows more productive and seamless while saving significant time.
The Benefits of Generative AI with Substance 3D
Sébastien Deguy, vice president of 3D and immersive at Adobe, said: Adobe is always looking for new and innovative ways to put cutting-edge creative tools in the hands of designers and artists. Integrating the generative AI capabilities of Adobe Firefly into Adobe Substance 3D aims to do more than just streamline the creative process: it opens up uncharted creative possibilities with new generative workflows that unleash the human imagination, rather than replacing it.
For industrial designers, game and VFX professionals, these updates mean faster ideation and greater creative freedom, as well as the ability to create high-quality, realistic textures and environments in a fraction of the time and cost required before. Marketing professionals and content creators will also benefit from the new features as they create high-fidelity visuals and animations to enhance brand presentations and storytelling.
By default, Adobe Firefly will add “content credentials” to assets created or edited using Adobe Firefly features, indicating that generative AI was used in the creation process. Content credentials are verifiable details that act as an “ingredient label” for digital content. They help bring greater transparency to digital content by displaying contextual information such as the asset name, creation date, the digital tools used to create it, and any edits made along the way.
