Leica Camera AG announced the release of a special limited edition model of the Leica Summilux-M f1.4/35mm lens, the Black edition. This lens is available from Leica stores for USD $10,495.
The Leica Summilux-M f1.4/35mm is highly regarded as the world’s best lens, and now a very limited edition Black model is available for collectors. The packaging for this lens also has a vintage-like design reminiscent of the earliest models of the M series, and comes with a lens container, an original lens hood, and a round lens hood. This lens is also equipped with a filter thread for E46.
The new Leica Summilux-M f1.4/35mm Black is based on the first model that appeared in 1961 and features a special design with a black anodized finish and a silver-colored stainless steel front ring, commonly known as the “steel rim.” The decorative ring is engraved with the words “LEITZ WETZLAR,” and the lens barrel is engraved with a special serial number as a limited edition model. The focus lock button is made of brass and has a black painted finish. The paint will wear down with use, giving it a unique texture and color.
The numbers and lettering on the focus ring are based on the design of the earliest model, and the feet (white) and meter (red) numbers on the distance scale have been swapped in color from the silver-colored Summilux-M f1.4/35mm version.
In terms of image quality, like the silver-colored reissue “Leica Summilux-M f1.4/35mm,” shooting at full aperture produces a very soft bokeh effect. Due to its attractive bokeh effect, the “Leica Summilux-M f1.4/35mm” is also known as the “True King of Bokeh.” Stopping down to F2.8 produces extremely sharp, distortion-free, and neat images. The lens and its performance is regarded by their ability fully meet the high image quality standards required in modern production.
