Sigma will release “SIGMA 50mm F1.2 DG DN” prime lens for mirrorless full-frame L mount/Sony E mount cameras. The release date is scheduled for April 18, 2024. The suggested retail price is $1,599, subject to fees and taxes.
The SIGMA 50mm F1.2 DG DN lens has the brightest aperture of F1.2, the highest level of descriptive power in the SIGMA Art line, and is the lightest weight in its class.
What Sigma focused on with this lens was its descriptive power, which can be used even at maximum aperture, and its portability, which allows it to demonstrate its performance in any field. In terms of depiction, we have achieved high resolution across the entire focus range from maximum aperture, and have also focused on the beauty of the large bokeh at F1.2. On top of that, Sigma succeeded in making the lens significantly smaller and lighter by eliminating unnecessary lens construction and mechanical design.
The lens is equipped with a full range of functions suitable for professional use, such as high-precision AF using a new method of HLA that reduces volume while maintaining the same thrust.
The best descriptive power
This lens was designed with emphasis on high resolution across the entire focus range from wide open aperture, and large, beautiful bokeh. The contrast between the sharpness of the focal plane and the melting bokeh creates a three-dimensional effect that is only possible with F1.2. Furthermore, the 13 aperture blades allow for beautiful bokeh effects. Focus breathing is also suppressed, so you can take full advantage of the F1.2 depiction when shooting video.
Brightness with an aperture value of F1.2 and high resolution from the shortest distance to infinity
The latest optical design achieves high resolution with all aberrations thoroughly suppressed even at maximum aperture. Any scene can be depicted in detail without color bleeding. In addition, by adopting floating focus, which is advantageous for improving close-range performance, it is possible to create stable, high-quality images over a wide range from the shortest distance to infinity.
Rich and beautiful bokeh with no color bleeding
By effectively correcting various aberrations such as spherical aberration, sagittal coma flare, and axial chromatic aberration, the lens achieves smooth and natural bokeh with no color bleeding from the in-focus surface. Since double-line blur is also suppressed, it is possible to take advantage of the melt-in-your-mouth bokeh effect.
Circular aperture with 13 aperture blades
Adopts 13 aperture blades, a first for SIGMA. It is said that it maintains its circular shape even when stopped down from wide open. By maximizing the surface precision of the aspherical lens, it is possible to produce smooth and beautiful bokeh.
Designed to suppress focus breathing
Focus breathing is significantly suppressed by optimizing the placement of the focus group and the aspherical shape. Since there is little change in the angle of view due to focus movement, it is possible to naturally express focus movement when shooting video.
Designed with consideration to flare and ghosting
Regarding flare and ghosting, which reduce image quality, we use cutting-edge simulation technology to take measures against incident light under all conditions. High backlight resistance allows you to take clear and crisp shots under any lighting conditions.
The lightest lens body in its class
By pursuing high optical performance and portability, which are originally contradictory, without compromise, we have condensed the highest level of performance into the lightest lens body in its class. The company has created an F1.2 lens that can be used in any environment, rather than one that can only be used in limited situations or applications.
Dual HLA using a new method
We have developed a new method based on the HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) linear motor, which is characterized by high drive accuracy and quietness, and significantly reduces the volume while maintaining the same thrust. It is adopted for each of the two focus groups. This technological innovation has made it possible to achieve both high-speed AF shooting and a compact lens body.
Lens configuration and mechanical design
While using high refractive index glass materials and four aspherical lenses, each glass element has been made as thin as possible. Processing thin lenses with high precision is said to be difficult, but the technology at SIGMA’s Aizu factory makes this difficult mass production possible.
Furthermore, the overall length has been shortened while ensuring high performance through floating focus, resulting in a compact lens configuration. We pursued weight reduction in the mechanical design, and by eliminating each part without waste, Sigma achieved the lightest weight in its class at 745g (for L mount).
SIGMA 50mm F1.2 DG DN is functional
In addition to being equipped with various functions to support shooting, such as the AFL button * and aperture ring, Sigma pursued the construction of the lens body itself and a high-quality operation feel. It has functionality and reliability that meets the high demands of professionals, and a high build quality that can be used for a long time with peace of mind.
*Limited to compatible cameras. Also, the functions assigned vary depending on the camera.
High build quality with Art line specifications
By assembling high-precision parts made from materials such as lightweight and strong TSC (polycarbonate with the same heat shrinkage rate as aluminum), the Sigma Art line’s high quality requirements are not sacrificed by the weight.. It has a sense of rigidity and durability, and a build quality that allows it to be used reliably as a photography tool for a long time.
Various shooting assist functions
This lens is equipped with an AFL button that can be assigned any function. In addition to the aperture ring, it also has a lock switch for the aperture ring and a click switch that turns the click on and off.
Dust-proof and waterproof
In addition to the dust- and splash-proof body, the front surface of the lens is coated with a water- and dirt-repellent coating, so you can shoot with confidence even in harsh outdoor environments.
*The structure is dust-proof and drip-proof, and is not waterproof.
Flower-shaped hood with lock included
A special flower-shaped hood is included. Comes with a locking mechanism, so it can be installed securely.
