Canon announced the release of the RF24mm F1.4 L VCM and RF50mm F1.4 L VCM, large-aperture prime L line lenses that achieve high image quality across the entire screen as well as large, beautiful bokeh with an aperture of F1.4, in late December 2024 as new products in the RF lens series for the EOS R system.
Canon RF24mm and RF50mm F1.4 L Lens Features
Shoots large, beautiful bokeh and high image quality across the entire screen by taking advantage of the maximum aperture of F1.4
The large, beautiful bokeh effect achieved by the maximum aperture of F1.4 makes it possible to express the subject with emphasis. Since it is possible to shoot in dark scenes such as at night or indoors without increasing the sensitivity, it is said to have achieved clear still and video shooting with little noise. In addition, the optical design effectively arranges aspherical lenses and UD (Ultra low Dispersion) lenses, and the adoption of special coating technologies “ASC (Air Sphere Coating)” and “SWC (Subwavelength Structure Coating)” reduces various aberrations, flare and ghosting that cause image degradation, achieving high image quality across the entire screen.
Comfortable shooting thanks to the adoption of “electronic floating focus control” that combines VCM and Nano USM
The company says it has achieved excellent focusing through its “electronic floating focus control,” which combines a “VCM (voice coil motor)” and a “Nano USM (ultrasonic motor),” both of which are suitable for driving the heavy focus lens unit. In combination with the EOS R series’ Dual Pixel CMOS AF, it not only provides high-speed, high-precision AF, but also quiet and smooth focusing during video shooting.
In addition, the optical design thoroughly suppresses “focus breathing,” a phenomenon in which the angle of view changes when adjusting the focus during video shooting, enabling video shooting with a stable composition and minimal change in the angle of view.
Compact, lightweight design and high operability with iris ring
The RF24mm F1.4 L VCM weighs approximately 515g, the RF50mm F1.4 L VCM weighs approximately 580g, and both are small and lightweight, with a total length of approximately 99.3mm. In addition, just like the RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z and RF35mm F1.4 L VCM, they are equipped with an iris ring, allowing manual control of the aperture, mainly during video recording.
