According to Blackmagic Design, many Blackmagic Design products are being used in the “GMO Global Studio,” a hybrid event space that also supports live streaming and was opened inside GMO Internet Tower. The installed equipment includes URSA Broadcast G2 cameras, ATEM Constellation 8K switchers, ATEM 2 M/E Advanced Panel 20, and more.
GMO Global Studios, Inc. is one of the group companies of the GMO Internet Group, which provides various internet-related services, and is involved in event production and live streaming businesses. GMO Global Studios, an event space that the company opened in March this year, consists of three studios that can be used depending on the purpose and use. The main studio, WORLD STUDIO, is permanently equipped with a large LED display of about 500 inches, and virtual production using XR technology is also possible.
Company director Hidenori Kakeda commented as follows:
Kakeda: After the COVID-19 outbreak, we switched all of our internal events, which we had previously rented large venues for, to online distribution. At first, we were volunteering, but as we set up green screens in our company’s conference rooms and rented distribution studios, we noticed a demand for a hybrid event space that could be enjoyed both online and offline, albeit with a limited number of participants, so we established GMO Global Studios.
Kakeda: This studio is currently used for various purposes, such as events within the GMO Internet Group, external conferences, and shareholder meetings. One particularly big event is the in-house awards, which recognize the most active partners (employees) and project teams throughout the year. It is a major event attended by over 7,900 employees from across the group, including overseas bases.
For external customers, we do not simply rent out the equipment, but rather provide a comprehensive service from event production to the day’s operation.
The studio uses three URSA Broadcast G2s, with ATEM Camera Control used to control each camera. All camera footage and other signals are aggregated on a Videohub 40×40 12G router, which feeds an ATEM Constellation 8K and switched using an ATEM Advanced Panel 20 control panel. A Web Presenter 4K distribution device is used for streaming, with a Videohub Master Control Pro used for routing switching.
The company’s director, Kurataro Sano, commented on the selection of the equipment as follows:
Sano: When we were building the studio, we had to do it quickly and we needed to build a good studio while keeping the budget as low as possible. We also wanted the studio to be used for B2B internal conferences and entertainment filming such as commercials and movies. With that in mind, Blackmagic Design’s cameras were the best fit.
Sano: URSA Broadcast G2 can be used for cinema, broadcasting and streaming, and is very cost-effective. As for the switcher, ATEM switchers are more compact than other companies’ switchers. As an event team, we plan to hold events outside of this studio in the future, so we chose Blackmagic Design products because they are easy to carry around.
We also use a HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro for video playback and recording. The video projected onto the LED screen is sometimes output directly from the disguise media server, and sometimes output from the HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro via a switcher.
We held a press conference in this studio the other day, and we received comments that the image quality was quite good. We also installed a RedSpy camera tracking system sensor on the URSA Broadcast G2 for XR compositing, and the compatibility with that sensor is excellent. As new equipment continues to emerge, it is an advantage to be able to connect with products from various manufacturers.
