GoPro released a free update that enhances the photo-taking capabilities of its MISSION 1 series cameras. The update improves shutter response speed and allows for more precise control, resulting in higher accuracy in photos. Additionally, continuous high-speed shooting is now possible by holding down the shutter button.
Additionally, the company updated the recently released “MISSION Monitor” app. This update four new professional exposure adjustment tools and wireless camera connectivity. Furthermore, we’ve released a new version of the “GoPro Labs” firmware, which adds anamorphic lens support to the MISSION 1 PRO ILS for professionals in the film and television industry.
Since its launch earlier this year, the MISSION 1 series won a total of 12 top industry awards from 10 leading consumer technology, photography, and outdoor media outlets, including WIRED’s “Best Overall Action Camera,” Tom’s Guide Awards’ “Best Action Camera,” and “Editors’ Choice” awards from PCMag, Tom’s Guide, Gizmodo, and The Shortcut.
GoPro MISSION 1 Series Photo Function Update:
High-Performance Shutter Response + Continuous Shooting
The MISSION 1 series cameras feature a fundamentally redesigned photography mechanism, evolving into a solution that enables high-speed continuous shooting.
- High-speed shooting: A free firmware update enables ultra-fast shutter button response with zero delay, allowing you to take a picture the moment you press the shutter button on all MISSION 1 series cameras.
- Continuous shooting: By pressing and holding the shutter button, you can take photos continuously. You can take more than 100 RAW photos with 12MP and more than 20 RAW photos with 50MP.
- Buffer Indicator: When the camera’s buffer capacity approaches its limit, a new indicator will appear on the screen.
- Redesigned shutter sound: The latest shutter sound makes it easier to clearly hear when the shutter has been released for each photo.
This new shooting experience makes the “MISSION 1,” “MISSION 1 PRO,” and “MISSION 1 PRO ILS” the perfect match for the “Point-and-Shoot Grip.” Featuring a lightweight, rubber-coated metal frame, this grip transforms the camera into a high-performance handheld compact camera, ideal for run-and-gun shooting, street photography on the move, and travel photography.
Two cold shoe mounts allow for the attachment of accessories such as the “Light Mod 2,” creating a complete handheld shooting setup perfect for hiking, concerts, and road trips. The grip is available as a standalone accessory or as part of the “MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition.”
Jensen Granger, Creative Director of Photography at GoPro, commented as follows:
“By photographers, for photographers. That was our approach when updating the shooting experience for the MISSION 1 series.”
“This update opens an exciting new chapter in GoPro photography. Attaching a MISSION 1 series camera to the Point-and-Shoot Grip creates a highly durable, mountable, and high-performance travel camera capable of shooting 8K video. Whether you’re a first-time GoPro buyer or a seasoned photographer, this is a camera everyone will want in their bag.”
MISSION Monitor: New exposure adjustment tools and wireless connectivity
The free iPhone and iPad live preview app “MISSION Monitor” for the GoPro MISSION 1 series also updated. This update added four new professional monitoring tools to enhance exposure and color control, as well as wireless connectivity and other features to improve the aforementioned shooting experience.
- Histogram: A graph that displays various brightness levels within a frame in real time, allowing you to see a balanced image at a glance, protect highlights, and prevent shadow crushing.
- Waveform display: Maps the brightness of the entire frame, showing not just that “something is wrong,” but precisely which parts of the shot are clipped or underexposed.
- RGB Parade: Displays the red, green, and blue channels side-by-side, allowing you to verify if neutral tones are truly neutral and detect color casts before they become a problem in post-production. This is especially useful when shooting with GP-Log2, where color casts are barely visible to the naked eye.
- False Color Display: Replaces live video with a standardized color map, allowing you to instantly see which parts of the frame are clipped, which parts are underexposed, and whether skin tones are reproduced correctly.
- Wireless connectivity: Connects wirelessly to the camera, enabling cable-free live preview and image monitoring.
- A new photography experience: Supports updated features including the new “Rapid Photo” and “Continuous Shutter” shooting functions.
GoPro Labs: Anamorphic lens compatible with MISSION 1 PRO ILS
GoPro Labs, a public beta firmware program that enables features beyond the standard functions and operability of GoPro cameras, has added anamorphic lens support to the MISSION 1 PRO ILS with its latest firmware update. Combined with the camera’s Micro Four Thirds mount, this makes anamorphic video production possible with the world’s smallest and most robust compact cinema camera that supports interchangeable lenses.
Anamorphic lens support also includes compatibility with GoPro’s Emmy Award-winning HyperSmooth video stabilization technology. Additionally, GoPro Labs firmware writes pixel aspect ratio metadata to video files, allowing desktop playback and editing tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve to recognize and automatically correct the image’s original shape.
It supports squeeze ratios of 1.33x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x, and includes presets for quickly switching between anamorphic and spherical lenses. An on-camera desqueeze preview function on the rear screen is also planned for implementation soon.
