Tamron Co., Ltd. will release the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD (Model A067) (hereinafter referred to as TAMRON 50-400mm F4.5-6.3), a super telephoto zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless single-lens cameras compatible with the Nikon Z mount system, on September 19, 2024. The retail price is listed in Japan as 214,500 yen, approximately $1,500.
The TAMRON 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 is an ultra-telephoto zoom lens compatible with full-frame mirrorless cameras, with a zoom ratio of 8x starting at 50mm at the wide-angle end. It covers a range from the standard 50mm to the ultra-telephoto 400mm, yet is both compact and lightweight, with a length of 185.8mm and a weight of 1,180g, compared to 100-400mm class lenses.
By effectively arranging special glass materials, it achieves high image quality across the entire 50-400mm range. It is equipped with a linear motor focus mechanism VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) that is quiet and agile, and the company’s proprietary image stabilization mechanism VC (Vibration Compensation), making it suitable for any shooting scene. In addition, it is said that you can enjoy the world of half macro with its high close-up shooting capabilities with a minimum shooting distance of 0.25m at the wide-angle end and a maximum shooting magnification of 1:2.
It also comes with a full range of functions to support comfortable shooting, such as a lens design with improved texture and operability, and a connector port for Tamron’s proprietary software TAMRON Lens UtilityTM. In addition, by using the separately sold tripod mount accessory, a wide range of shooting is possible, including situations where a tripod is required. This is a compact, highly mobile super telephoto zoom lens that will not miss any shutter opportunities from the standard range to the super telephoto range.
TAMRON 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 with Uncompromising image quality across the entire zoom range
The lens consists of 24 elements in 18 groups. Two special glass elements, XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) lenses, three LD (Low Dispersion) lenses, one GM (Glass Molded Aspheric) lens, and one hybrid aspheric lens, are used lavishly and effectively to suppress various aberrations, including axial chromatic aberration, and achieve high resolution across the entire zoom range.
In addition, the lens is coated with BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating, which suppresses ghosting and flare and enables precise depiction of subject details even in backlit conditions, resulting in clear, sharp images.
Linear motor focus mechanism VXD achieves high-speed, high-precision AF
The autofocus drive uses a linear motor focus mechanism called VXD. It combines high-level AF speed and precision, allowing stress-free and comfortable focusing from the minimum shooting distance to infinity. In addition, its excellent focus tracking performance for moving subjects makes it possible to capture the moment without missing it, even when photographing wild birds or sports. In addition, it is very quiet, so it can be used for still image shooting and video shooting in quiet environments.
Compact super telephoto zoom lens
The 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 is a compact lens with a length of 185.8mm and a weight of 1,180g. It covers the focal length range from 50mm to 400mm, but is smaller and lighter than the 100-400mm class. It allows you to capture subjects with ease, even when photographing wild birds or sports.
Equipped with Tamron’s unique VC mechanism
While maintaining a compact size, the 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 is equipped with Tamron’s unique VC image stabilization mechanism. Its excellent image stabilization effect efficiently reduces blurring of the image caused by camera shake. In addition, by utilizing AI (artificial intelligence) technology, it is possible to obtain a correction effect that takes video shooting into consideration at focal lengths of 100mm or less.
Half macro photography with a maximum magnification of 1:2 is possible from the wide-angle end of 50mm to 70mm.
The 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 has a minimum shooting distance of 0.25m at the wide-angle end of 50mm, and a maximum shooting magnification of 1:2 from 50mm to 70mm, allowing you to enjoy half-macro photography, achieving extremely high close-up shooting capabilities as an ultra-telephoto zoom.
Furthermore, even at the telephoto end of 400mm, the minimum shooting distance is 1.5m and the maximum shooting magnification is 1:4, allowing for powerful shooting. By getting as close to the subject as you want, you can increase your photographic expression and freedom.
