Canon will release the RF28-70mm F2.8 IS STM standard zoom lens as a new product in the “RF lens” interchangeable lens series for the “EOS R system.” This lens is due to be released on September 27, 2024. The selling price on the Canon Japan shop will start from 188,100 yen.
The RF28-70mm F2.8 IS STM is a standard zoom lens that combines a compact, lightweight design that is easy to carry and handle with high image quality approaching that of an L lens. It covers a standard zoom range of focal lengths from 28mm to 70mm, which is easy to use for both still images and videos, and can be used in a variety of shooting scenes with just one lens.
With comfortable handheld shooting and natural, beautiful bokeh from the maximum aperture of F2.8, the lens is designed to meet a variety of photography needs, including still image users who want to easily take snapshots, portraits, landscapes, etc., as well as video users who want to further refine their expression when creating video works.
Canon RF28-70mm F2.8 IS STM Features
By downsizing the IS (image stabilization) unit and adopting a retractable structure, it has achieved an aperture value of F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, while achieving a compact and lightweight design with a total length of approximately 92.2 mm and a weight of approximately 495 g. In addition to its excellent portability, its user-friendly zoom range of focal lengths from 28 mm to 70 mm makes it suitable for a wide range of scenes, from still photography such as snapshots and portraits to video production.
The maximum aperture of F2.8 across the entire zoom range enables shooting with natural and beautiful bokeh across a wide range of focal lengths. In addition, the optimal optical design of 15 elements in 12 groups, with a “UD lens” positioned at the front, reduces various aberrations that cause image degradation, achieving high image quality across the entire screen that approaches that of an L lens.
This lens comes with a the lead screw type STM with a magnetic sensor that reads the motor rotation speed enables advanced feedback control, realizing high speed, high precision, quiet and smooth AF. In addition, the in-lens optical image stabilization mechanism achieves 5.5 stops, and when combined with an EOS R series camera equipped with an in-body image stabilization mechanism, cooperative control is achieved. When attached to the “EOS R1” (scheduled for release in November 2024), it demonstrates image stabilization effects of 7.5 stops in the center and 7.0 stops on the periphery according to the CIPA2024 standard, allowing for comfortable shooting.
