Apple announced a new iMac with an ultra-thin design, M4 chip and Apple Intelligence. The new iMac will have unified memory starting at 16GB. Pre-orders began on October 29, 2024, and sales will begin on November 8.
The incredible power of the M4
The M4 chip will significantly improve the iMac’s performance. With the fastest CPU cores and a more powerful CPU, the new iMac is up to 1.7 times faster than the M1-based iMac. In addition, the powerful GPU with Apple’s most advanced graphics architecture makes the M4-based iMac up to 2.1 times faster than the M1-based iMac for more intensive tasks like photo editing and gaming. It also promises smoother gameplay in upcoming game titles such as Civilization VII. The new iMac comes standard with 16GB of faster unified memory, and can be configured up to 32GB. The M4’s Neural Engine is more than three times faster than the M1-based iMac.

- Compared to the M1 iMac, it delivers up to 1.7x faster performance in apps like Microsoft Excel and up to 1.5x faster browsing performance in Safari, helping families, small businesses and entrepreneurs easily complete everyday productivity tasks.
- With frame rates up to 2x higher than the M1-powered iMac, gamers can enjoy incredibly smooth gameplay
- Editing photos and videos with complex filters and effects in apps like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro is up to 2.1x faster than on an M1-powered iMac, allowing content creators to edit like never before

New colors available for the iMac with M4
The new iMac comes in seven vivid colors, adding green, yellow, orange, pink, purple and blue to silver. The back of the iMac features a bold color designed to stand out, while the front features softer shades of the new color to help users focus on doing their best work. Every iMac comes with a matching Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse or optional Magic Trackpad, and all include USB-C ports, so users can charge their favorite devices with a single cable.
New Nano-texture display option
For the first time, iMac’s spacious 24-inch 4.5K Retina display is now available with a nano-texture glass option that dramatically reduces reflections and glare while maintaining beautiful image quality. Nano-texture glass enables the iMac to be placed in more spaces, such as a sunny living room or a bright storefront.
12MP center-frame camera for improved video calling
A new 12MP center frame camera with Desk View makes video calls even more engaging. Center frame ensures everyone is perfectly centered in the video during a video call, making it ideal for family get-togethers using FaceTime. Desk View uses a wide-angle lens to simultaneously show a bird’s-eye view of the user and their desk, making it convenient for educators to show students their lesson content or creators to show off their latest DIY projects. Also noteworthy is the popular studio-quality microphone array with beamforming and an immersive speaker sound system.
Apple iMac with M4 Connectivity
On the new iMac, all four USB-C ports support Thunderbolt 4 for ultra-fast data transfer. You can connect even more accessories, such as external storage, docks, and up to two 6K external displays, and create a huge canvas of over 50M pixels to expand your work (all four USB-C ports support Thunderbolt 4 on models equipped with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU).
iMac also supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. It also features Touch ID, which makes unlocking your computer, buying online with Apple Pay, and downloading apps simple and safe . * Touch ID also supports fast user switching, allowing you to switch to a different user profile with just the touch of your finger.
* iMacs with 8-core CPUs and 8-core GPUs can be configured with a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID (with numeric keypad), while iMacs with 10-core CPUs and 10-core GPUs come standard with Touch ID.
macOS Sequoia
macOS Sequoia has many features, including iPhone Mirroring, which allows users to wirelessly control their iPhone, apps, and notifications directly from their Mac. Safari introduces Highlights to quickly pick out relevant information from a site, a smarter redesigned Reader that shows a table of contents and a high-level summary, and a new video viewer for watching videos without distractions. Distraction Controls allows users to hide items on web pages that they feel are interfering with their browsing. Gaming is even more immersive with features like personalized spatial audio, advancements to Game Mode, and a wide range of exciting titles, including the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
Windows can now be tiled more easily, so users can organize their information in the layout that works best for them. The all-new Passwords app keeps all your passwords, passkeys and other authentication information stored in one place for convenient access. There are also beautiful new built-in backgrounds for video calls, including a range of color gradients and system wallpapers, or you can upload your own photos.
For a better environment
The new iMac with M4 is designed with the environment in mind, using 100% recycled aluminum in the stand, 100% recycled gold plating on several of its printed circuit boards, and 100% recycled tin and 100% recycled copper in the soldering. The iMac meets Apple’s standards for energy efficiency and is free of mercury, brominated flame retardants and PVC.
John Tarnus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, commented on the release of the new Apple iMac with M4:
