Fujifilm’s first professional digital camera for filmmaking, the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 (hereafter referred to as GFX ETERNA 55), has joined the list of IMAX certified digital cameras.
IMAX certifies a select group of high-end, best-in-class digital cameras that meet its quality standards. These cameras are carefully selected for their high-quality image capture capabilities and their ability to shoot in IMAX’s signature extended aspect ratio.
What is the IMAX Certification?
IMAX Certified Digital Cameras are a key component of the “Filmed For IMAX” program, an end-to-end partnership program that expands opportunities for filmmakers to take full advantage of every aspect of IMAX’s technology offering and deliver the most immersive cinematic experiences to audiences around the world.
Featuring the largest sensor of any digital cinema sensor currently available on the market, the GFX ETERNA 55 is capable of recording using the full height of the sensor (32.71mm) in open gate mode, prioritizing image area and vertical scale – key attributes of IMAX. The native 4:3 open gate GFX sensor provides a large-format canvas, giving filmmakers greater freedom in framing while supporting both spherical and anamorphic workflows.

“Adding the Fujifilm GFX ETERNA 55 to our roster of IMAX Certified cameras is a win for filmmakers and fans alike, providing the world’s best storytellers with another world-class tool for designing truly immersive cinematic visuals specifically for IMAX,” Jonathan Fisher, Chief Content Officer at IMAX, said. “As we continue to expand our Certified Camera ecosystem, we open the door for even more directors, DPs and production partners to deliver unforgettable experiences to audiences around the world.”
Cinema-Ready
The GFX ETERNA 55 comes production-ready with a durable cinema-style build packed with features including industry-standard connections, an adaptable native lens mount, and a “visually infinite” internal electronically variable ND filter. The camera’s premier logarithmic color profile, F-Log2 C, provides filmmakers with the ability to create images with wide flexibility in color reproduction.

Filmmakers also have access to 10 new film simulation 3D LUTs featuring creative looks inspired by film, as well as 20 internal film simulation modes.

“Receiving this certification for the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 is an honor for many reasons, one of which is that IMAX is a beacon for aspiring filmmakers. We are extremely proud that the GFX ETERNA 55 offers an accessible path for filmmakers to tell stories with a grand cinematic perspective,” Yujiro Igarashi, General Manager of the Professional Imaging Group, Imaging Solutions Division, Fujifilm Corporation, commented..
“At Fujifilm, we believe deeply in the importance of the theatrical moviegoing experience, where audiences come together to share thoughts, ideas, and emotions through a visual storytelling experience. The GFX ETERNA 55 is built for storytellers of all types, including filmmakers who dream of creating larger-than-life stories on the silver screen and beyond. Fujifilm is proud to offer filmmakers a system that enables the ability to create films worthy of the cinematic scale of The IMAX Experience.”
