According to Blackmagic Design, German production house south&browse has moved all post-production steps, including editing, color correction and finishing, to DaVinci Resolve Studio.
The Munich-based company has designed and produced more than 60 TV formats and series over the past 20 years. The need for speed and versatility to produce content for many of Germany’s major TV stations brought DaVinci Resolve Studio to the fore. South&browse Technical Director Tim Heinrich-Noll commented:
Heinrich-Noll: Until now, we used several editing solutions depending on the project, and DaVinci Resolve Studio was mainly used for color correction and finishing. However, the turning point came when Resolve’s breadth of capabilities expanded to include everything we needed, from small productions to large-scale documentary productions.
Heinrich-Noll and his team now do almost everything in DaVinci Resolve Studio, including the 4K HDR production pipeline.
Heinrich-Noll: Editing, mixing, grading, VFX and finishing all in one software.
To make collaboration as smooth as possible, the studio is equipped with an on-premises Linux PostgreSQL database server, which connects to 10 editing suites. Six of them support SDR and HDR grading, and one supports audio mixing in DaVinci Resolve Studio’s Fairlight. Many of his online editing and VFX workstations also use DaVinci Resolve Studio, and his editing/color suite incorporates the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor and DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel for editing and color correction, respectively.
Heinrich-Noll: It allows colorists to start grading while editing is still in progress, so projects of any size can be completed in less time. Similarly, Resolve’s HDR toolset lets you deliver both SDR and HDR master files in one environment. This is really a win-win.
Editing, grading, sound design, mixing and finishing. All these operations are completed in one click. In the past, this process was very complicated, requiring time and money to adapt and re-adapt projects for each update, but now one system can handle it all smoothly.
With DaVinci Resolve Studio, even small mistakes can be fixed in no time.
Heinrich-Noll: For example, if the title is misspelled and I have to go back to the editing sequence, I go to the project file, fix the mistake, and do the mastering again. This is very convenient and keeps the production workflow from getting bogged down by mistakes.
In addition, projects such as audio mixes can be exchanged smoothly with external members.
Heinrich-Noll: We send the project files and our collaborators provide the audio mixes. Work can continue uninterrupted, so you can work faster and smarter.
Besides the significant time savings, the price of the hardware and software was also a deciding factor. There are no ongoing license fees and no need to repurchase software with updates.
