At the “EOS VR SYSTEM” corner of the Canon booth at CP+ 2023, a virtual experience was exhibited using 3D 180° VR images that were shot by combining RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE and EOS R5C.
In the virtual reality corner, you can select and experience what you want to see from 3 contents. The contents are independent and completely different, such as “travel”, “wild animals”, and “important cultural properties”. Seminars are also held by creators who have shot “wild animals” and “important cultural properties”, and you can enjoy them even more by watching and participating in them.

What is EOS VR SYSTEM?
The EOS VR SYSTEM is a shooting system consisting of the RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE, EOS R5 C/EOS R5, and an application used to convert VR images. With RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE and EOS R5 C/EOS R5, you can easily start high-quality VR shooting. Compared to 360-degree photography, 180-degree photography reduces the burden of photography because the photographer and shadows are not reflected and the user can concentrate on the front (viewpoint on the lens side). Since the video size can be reduced, the ease of editing is also one of the advantages.
Features and strengths of the EOS VR SYSTEM
Clear images even in dark scenes
The large aperture of F2.8, the optical performance of the L lens, the high-sensitivity CMOS sensor of the EOS R5 C/EOS R5, and DIGIC X work together to demonstrate high noise processing capabilities, and to express dim scenes and intentionally reduced light levels. It is said that it realizes clear image expression. It is also possible to shoot in dark situations with only ground light, such as at night.
Reduced ghosting in backlight
Outdoor shooting with VR lenses with a wide angle of view is generally limited to times when the sun is not reflected in the lens, but the RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE has excellent anti-reflection effects. By adopting its own special coating “SWC (Subwavelength Structure Coating)”, it reduces the ghost in the backlight and is suitable for shooting in the morning and evening when oblique light is attractive.
Expanding outdoor shooting opportunities
Conventionally, outdoor VR shooting was limited to around noon because the shadow of the photographer would be reflected in the front light and the ghost could occur in the back light when the sun was slanting, but with the adoption of SWC, the ghost is eliminated. By reducing it, the opportunities for shooting outdoors have been greatly expanded.
Reduce VR shooting and editing processes
The EOS VR SYSTEM records video with a single EOS R5 C/EOS R5 sensor. When shooting with two lenses and two cameras (two sensors), there are differences in color and brightness due to individual differences in sensors, and it was necessary to unify them, but with a single sensor, the left and right lenses There is no need for this because a single sensor can receive the light coming from the
In addition, each scene can be recorded as one data without managing two files for left and right. Compared to using two lenses and two cameras (two sensors), it reduces the cumbersome steps before and after shooting, shortening the workflow. It is also attractive that only one recording medium is required.
Experience 180° VR video of 8K 3D video at CP+2023 venue
At the VR section of their booth, the Canon PR team were offering three realistic VR video experiences recorded with the EOS VR SYSTEM.
Unlike ordinary chairs, the chairs swayed and moved, so I felt like I was on an unstable footing deep in the mountains where the badgers live, which made me feel even more immersed. Overall, there was little movement, but I could see the hole dug by the badger and felt that it had dug deep. As the badger approached, I could see its fluffy fur swaying.
For those who are interested in VR images but have not seen them because they don’t have VR goggles, please come and experience 8K 3D 180° VR images at the venue.
