Blackmagic Design Case Study: “MixOne Cinema”

Kevin Garcia, director of the video production company MixOne Cinema, was one of the adopters of the ATEM 2 M/E Constellation HD.

Kevin Garcia: A big advantage of the ATEM is that the camera’s power and ISO are mappable and can be assigned to different locations. It’s useful for mixing IMAG and broadcast video from one switcher at the same time,” says Garcia. “For every event, I also use a USB webcam output as a backup to send to the broadcast computer, just in case.

For live performances, it’s very dynamic, and Garcia says the ability to control everything in greater detail and more quickly has greatly benefited Garcia’s workflow.

Kevin Garcia: At Pentatonix at the Hollywood Bowl, we shot with 12 cameras. Some of the cameras were about 300m away, but with the ATEM 2 M/E and Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter, we were able to monitor and communicate with all of them.

MixOne Cinema recently added a HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro broadcast deck to their equipment. According to Garcia, the main reason for using Blackmagic Design products is the ability to complete the work in a short period of time, as the delivery time may be delayed by an hour or two depending on the delivery.

Kevin Garcia: Being able to use SSDs and SD cards with the HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro is a big help. Being able to record in H.264 was a huge advantage when I didn’t have time to encode. Evanescence’s performance at the Louder Than Life festival required an hour to set up a special event stream on the DWPresents Twitch channel. By combining all Blackmagic Design products, it is possible to set everything up in a short time.
