On February 23, 2023, SIGMA will release the new “SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG DN|Art” large aperture standard lens in the Art line “Art F1.4,” that enables artistic photographic expression. The suggested retail price is 152,900 yen including tax.
The SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG DN|Art is a large aperture standard lens designed exclusively for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It is a new addition to SIGMA’s Art line, the F1.4 series, which is synonymous with SIGMA’s Art line. This lens is available for L-mount and Sony E-mounts.
While maintaining the concept of the original 50mm F1.4 DG HSM|Art, which determined the evaluation of the “Art F1.4,” this new lens is a standard lens that can be used in a wide range of shooting scenes, and incorporates all the latest technologies to achieve top-class optical performance. The optimal size and high-speed autofocus required for current mirrorless systems are highly compatible while maintaining the image quality and stability.
In addition to the brightness scale of the large aperture of F1.4 and large and beautiful bokeh, various aberrations are brought together in an optimal balance to pursue flat and well-balanced image quality from the center to the periphery. As a result, the new “Art F1.450mm” for creating works has been completed, which is truly almighty in terms of depiction performance, mobility, and operability. This is the ideal “standard” lens that SIGMA considers.
Main Features
“Art F1.4” standard, uncompromising optical performance
Based on the latest optical design technology, the 14 elements in 11 groups are optimally arranged with 3 aspherical lenses and 1 SLD glass. It effectively suppresses various aberrations such as astigmatism and curvature of field that cannot be corrected by camera functions.
Despite its large aperture of f/1.4, the image formation performance at the periphery of the image has been pushed to the limit, and sagittal coma flare has been suppressed as much as possible. This allows the photographer to utilize the lens to its max performance with little compromise in quality. In addition to clear image quality with no color bleeding and fine detail across the entire screen, it is possible to take full advantage of the beauty of the large, natural bokeh that is unique to F1.4.
High-speed AF for light and comfortable shooting
The 50mm F1.4 DG DN|Art adopts the linear motor “HLA (High-response Linear Actuator)” for the first time in the Art line specially designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. In addition, by using a single aspherical lens on both sides of the focus lens, the lens demonstrates high-speed, quiet focusing and high tracking performance despite its large aperture. With a maximum aperture of F1.4 and high-performance AF, it can be used not only for shooting in dark places, but also for shooting moving objects, snapshots, and even movies.
High performance, slim and compact
Considering the ease of holding when the camera is attached to mirrorless systems, which are becoming increasingly compact. A slim lens barrel that is easy to hold is achieved by devising the layout of each glass material and mechanism. Without compromising on the SIGMA Art series’s concept of “prioritizing optical performance”, they pursued the “optimal sense of size” required for a mirrorless system. This lens has succeeded in achieving both top-class performance and a sense of size as a light and mobile shooting tool at a high level.
Enhanced functions, high build quality
Equipped with a focus mode switch, an aperture ring click switch that turns the click ON/OFF, an aperture ring lock switch that prevents unintentional operation, and an AFL button that can be assigned any function from the camera. It is said that consideration has been given to intuitive operations during shooting. In addition, the dust- and splash-proof structure and the water-repellent and anti-fouling coating on the front of the lens make it suitable for various shooting environments. While realizing compactness and weight reduction and operability, it guarantees high build quality with reliable processing technology of “Made in Aizu,” the region this lens was built.
