According to Blackmagic Design, the hit Filipino children’s show “Mang Lalakbay” was shot on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro and Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro digital film cameras. The show was edited and color corrected using DaVinci Resolve Studio.
“Mang Lalakbay” is the first educational travel program for children in the Philippines. Broadcast on the ABS-CBN Capamilia network from September 2022. Manila-based production company The Jumpcat Experiment provides a complete end-to-end post-workflow for the show, from concept to execution and mastering.
The show will be led by a human host with fellow puppets who will introduce viewers to the different landscapes of the Philippines. That means Jumpcat’s production team will have to travel across the country and visit remote areas. Director/Co-Founder Floy Favela and Co-Founder/Executive Director Joan Lopez-Flores are committed to creating a camera that captures quality images in all lighting conditions and is easy to set up and use anywhere. I needed it.
Favela: The main target audience for this show is children, so we wanted bright, vibrant and natural colors, and the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro helped us achieve this. The RAW footage also gave me the desired color detail and white balance consistency. The sharpness of detail is amazing!
The main camera for the show was a Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro with a Blackmagic Video Assist 7” 3G monitor and recorder, and a SmartView 4K broadcast monitor for the director’s monitor. , edited and graded in DaVinci Resolve Studio.
Since there are many scenes involving a human host and two puppets, filming presents its own set of challenges, such as framing the shots and allowing the puppeteers to manipulate them as freely as possible.
Mr. Favela: Shooting these three is very difficult, and I am always careful not to interfere with the puppeteer. We have established a standard camera setup that Pocket Camera can crop without losing image quality.
Also, some wide and medium shots require extreme zooming in to hide the puppeteer, which is not a visually good frame. With regard to this problem, the Pocket Camera can shoot in 4K and 6K, which is very helpful.
When traveling to remote areas in Japan for photography, the compact, lightweight design and performance under low certification conditions will prove to be powerful.
Favela: For location shoots, we have two Pocket 6K Pros for wide shots and close-up shots. Most of the shots are taken in natural light, as the image quality is excellent and can be captured with minimal lighting. And because you can shoot in 6K, you can crop the shot without sacrificing the sharpness of the material.
Mr. Lopez-Flores also concluded with this.
López-Flores: We are very happy to see the popularity and viewership of shows using Blackmagic Design cameras, such as ‘Mang Lalakbay’, the first children’s travel show in the Philippines. In Season 2, we look forward to capturing even more dynamic and stunning shots with the same equipment in the Philippines and around the world.
