Blackmagic Design has announced the new Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro. The suggested retail price is 356,800 yen including tax.
The studio camera is more capable than ever, with an EF lens mount, a large 6K sensor with improved colorimetry and detail processing, ND filters, and the ability to stream live using Ethernet or mobile data. Like the rest of the Studio Camera series, the compact all-in-one design features a lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate housing with a large 7-inch HDR viewfinder and broadcast connector.
Similarly, the “Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2” is an updated model with a built-in live distribution function. The suggested retail price is 266,800 yen including tax.
The Blackmagic Studio Camera condenses the same functions as a large studio camera into a small body that is compact and portable. Combining the dynamic range and color science of a digital film camera, the camera can handle harsh lighting conditions and provide cinematic-looking images. The sensor supports ISO up to 25,600, allowing you to create cinematic images even in dimly lit rooms. Talkback, tally, camera control, built-in color corrector, Blackmagic RAW recording to USB disk and much more. The new Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 and 6K Pro models also include built-in live streaming capabilities using Ethernet or mobile data, so you can place your camera almost anywhere and stream.
Blackmagic Studio Cameras are designed for live production, but they are not limited to use with live switchers. You can record Blackmagic RAW to a USB disk and use it in any tripod situation. Equipped with a large 7-inch viewfinder, it is also useful for talk shows, TV production, news programs, sports, education, conference presentations, and even weddings. The large, bright display with side handle, touch screen, and physical controls make it easy to follow the subject, making it comfortable to use even for long hours of shooting.
Combining the latest sensor with Blackmagic’s 5th generation color science, you get the same imaging technology found in digital film cameras. The color corrector can also be controlled from the switcher. With 13 stops of dynamic range, it can capture dark blacks to bright whites, making it ideal for color correction. The 4K model supports 3840 x 2160 resolution and the 6K model supports 6144 x 3456 resolution for HD and Ultra HD production. Furthermore, all models support from 23.98 to 60fps.
The Blackmagic Studio Camera has an EF/MFT lens mount and is compatible with a wide variety of photographic lenses. The photographic lenses are designed for high-resolution photography, so they are of high quality. Similar to larger studio cameras, the optional Focus Demand and Zoom Demand allow the lens to be adjusted from the tripod handle, eliminating the need to manually adjust the lens and providing the same feel as an advanced broadcast B4 lens.
Unlike consumer cameras, Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 and 6K Pro models have built-in talkback functionality on the SDI interface so switcher operators can communicate with camera operators during live events. The director can direct the cameraman to select shots, preventing problems such as all cameras shooting the same shot at the same time. The talkback connector is on the side of the camera and accepts standard 5-pin XLR broadcast headsets.
Blackmagic Studio Camera has many connectors so you can connect both consumer and broadcast equipment. The advanced Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 and 6K Pro models are designed for broadcast workflows and also feature 12G-SDI, 10GBASE-T Ethernet, talkback and balanced XLR audio inputs. 10G Ethernet transports video, tally, talkback and camera power over a single cable for quick setup. It has the same workflow as SMPTE fiber, but uses standard Category 6A coaxial Ethernet cable for a lower price.
The Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 and 6K Pro models have built-in live streaming capabilities so you can place the camera anywhere in the world. A camera can be placed at a remote location to generate an H.264 HD live stream and send it over the internet to the studio. You can connect the camera to the internet via the built-in Ethernet, or connect your 4G/5G mobile phone to the USB-C port and stream data remotely.
The Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro features high quality ND filters with remote control to reduce the amount of light entering the camera. The 2, 4 and 6-stop filters are designed to match the camera’s colorimetry and color science, providing wide latitude even in poor lighting conditions. These filters are designed to filter visible and infrared wavelengths equally to remove IR contamination. The ND filter can be electronically controlled via the function buttons on the back of the camera, the Demand button, and the remote. Camera control staff can control the camera from a distance, allowing photographers to focus on getting the perfect shot.

The amazing 6K sensor in the Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro delivers amazing performance in low light conditions. It also has an EF lens mount, so it supports a wide variety of lenses you already own. In addition to having all the high-end features of the 4K model, it also has a built-in remote-controlled ND filter and live streaming function. I think it’s really cool to be able to place cameras almost anywhere in the world. Anyone doing live production will love it.
