Sigma Corporation announced the SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art due out on September 26, 2024. The sales price on the company’s online shop in Japan is 275,000 yen including tax, approximately $1,999.
The SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art is a new full-frame standard zoom lens that realizes a zoom range of 28-105mm with a bright F2.8 aperture. The latest optical design, which uses large-diameter FLD glass, SLD glass, and five aspherical lenses, achieves high optical performance at all focal lengths despite being a lens with a wide zoom range of F2.8. In addition to high-speed AF using HLA, the lens also has functionality such as switches, buttons, and a dust- and splash-proof structure, all packed into a compact and lightweight body weighing less than 1 kg.
The lens shoots expressive power that goes one step beyond conventional wisdom in any scene, from expansive landscape photography to portrait photography that makes use of large bokeh effects.
SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art Main Features
Maintains F2.8 through the whole focal range
This lens breaks the standard zoom lens covering a telephoto end of 105mm has overturned the conventional wisdom of a constant F4, achieving a wide zoom range of 28-105mm with a constant F2.8. By thoroughly suppressing aberrations within each lens group, it has achieved extremely high optical performance throughout the entire zoom range and focus position.
In addition, the 105mm focal length makes it possible to take telemacro shots by taking advantage of its excellent close-up shooting capabilities.
With the 85mm and 105mm zoom ranges often used for portrait photography, this lens can be used for everything from wide landscape photography to portrait photography. The F2.8 brightness throughout the entire range allows you to enjoy large, beautiful bokeh effects and allows you to set a one-stop faster shutter speed, making it suitable for a wider range of shooting scenes.
The minimum shooting distance is 40cm across the entire zoom range. At 105mm, close-up shooting is possible with a maximum shooting magnification of 1:3.1. It can be used as a telemacro lens, allowing you to enjoy close-up shooting in environments where it is difficult to get close to the subject.
Lens construction
This lens features a luxurious optical system that uses two FLD glass elements, one SLD glass element, and five aspherical lenses. The first group is equipped with a large-diameter φ66.4mm FLD glass element, which is difficult to process. In order to achieve stable performance even at high zoom magnifications, the optical system was designed with the aim of completing aberration suppression within each group. This has resulted in extremely high optical performance with thorough suppression of aberrations across the entire zoom range and focus position.
Regarding flare and ghosting, which reduce image quality, measures have been taken to deal with all types of incident light conditions based on cutting-edge simulation technology. In addition, by applying a nanoporous coating and super multi-layer coating, flare and ghosting are suppressed to the utmost. With high resistance to backlight, it is said that clear, sharp shooting is possible under any lighting conditions.
Designed to reduce focus aberrations
The lens is designed to suppress focus breathing, allowing for natural focus shifting during video shooting.
Mobility is also an important factor for a standard zoom lens. Five aspherical lenses are effectively positioned to shorten the overall length, and magnesium is used for the lens barrel of the mount, resulting in a weight of less than 1kg. With mobility that allows handheld shooting, you can enjoy the expressive power of a 28-105mm zoom range and F2.8 brightness while still enjoying the ease of use of a typical standard zoom lens.
By using five aspherical lenses, Sigma’s design shortens the overall optical length without compromising on image quality.
By optimizing the design and materials of each part, it has been possible to achieve a weight of less than 1kg despite being an F2.8 constant zoom. Magnesium is used for the lens barrel parts in the mount area to ensure strength while achieving weight reduction. Compared to when the same parts are made of aluminum, this leads to a weight reduction of 2/3 for each part.
Fully featured and high build quality
In addition to high-precision, high-speed AF using the HLA (High-response Linear Actuator), it is weather-resistant with a dust-proof and splash-proof construction and a water-repellent and dirt-resistant coating, and is equipped with a full range of functions such as an aperture ring and AFL button. The easy-to-operate focus ring allows you to enjoy delicate and comfortable MF shooting.
The AF actuator uses a linear motor HLA (High-response Linear Actuator). It achieves high-speed AF with excellent driving precision. Because it is a very quiet motor, you can shoot videos without worrying about noise.
It is equipped with an aperture ring, an aperture ring click switch, and an aperture ring lock switch, allowing you to adjust the aperture to suit your shooting needs.
The AFL buttons are located in two locations, and can be assigned any function. By positioning them on the side and on the top, the buttons can be easily operated whether the device is held horizontally or vertically.
The zoom lock switch can be used to lock the lens at the wide-angle position to prevent unintentional zoom movement due to the lens’s own weight. The lock can be released not only by the switch but also by zoom operation, allowing for flexible response to sudden shooting situations.
In addition to the dust-proof and splash-proof body, the front of the lens is coated with a water-repellent and dirt-resistant coating, so you can shoot safely even in harsh outdoor environments. A flower-shaped hood is included. It has a locking mechanism, so it can be attached securely.
