Metabones released the EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II and the EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster XL 0.64x II. They are available for purchase through Metabones’ worldwide distributor network and official store.
This new product inherits a unique feature set from the original: support for Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) on compatible cameras (such as the Panasonic GH7), smooth iris function on compatible lenses from Canon, Sigma, and Tamron for beautiful iris/aperture movement in videos, and support for both In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS).
Metabones EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II
This EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II uses the same optics as its predecessor: the 5-group, 4-element optical design uses high-refractive-index tantalum-based optical glass and is specially optimized for the MFT mount sensor size and filter stack to achieve high optical quality.
The MTF chart improves across the entire image, and the Speed Booster ULTRA for MFT mount can improve the sharpness of the attached lens, never degrade it. It reduces the focal length of the attached lens by 0.71x and increases the brightness by one stop.
Similarly, the EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster XL 0.64x II shares the same 6-group, 4-element optical design as its predecessor, but reduces the focal length by 0.64x and increases brightness by 1.3 stops, both designed by Caldwell Photographic in the US.
Optimized for OM System
The EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II has been redesigned to be optimal for OM system cameras. As a result, support for older cameras with passive/non-electronic MFT mounts has been discontinued. For example, it no longer supports the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K released in 2012 or the Digital Bolex D16 released in 2013.
As for new features, the EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II and EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster XL 0.64x II have a new feature that allows users to manually set the EXIF data of Canon EF mount lenses and later recall it by pressing the Speed Booster button. This setting can be recalled by pressing the Speed Booster button.
The company has published a table on its website summarizing the differences between the various Metabones EF-MFT Mount T-series “Speed Booster” and “Smart Adapter” products.
Metabones says that as of the time of writing, they have no intention of ending support for the original firmware versions for current users, and will maintain the current status quo for the EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II, EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster XL 0.64x II, and all Metabones products for Blackmagic without updates for the time being.
Simultaneously with the new product launch, Metabones will be releasing a new firmware version 4.20 for the EF-MFT mount, and existing users are encouraged to download the Metabones App from metabones.com and click the “SUPPORT/DOWNLOAD” link to get the latest version.
