Sony Cine Team, a subsidiary of Sony Electronics in the United States, announced that the upcoming “BURANO version 2.0″ firmware update will add new features and improved usability. BURANO version 2.0, scheduled for release in March 2025, will include enhancements in response to requests from the user community, such as a new imager scan mode, 1.8x de-squeeze, and improved monitoring.

New Imager Scan Mode
Version 2.0 adds new imager scan modes, including a 3.8K full-frame crop that utilizes almost the entire sensor and shoots at up to 120fps, and a 1.9K mode that shoots at up to 240fps.
These new imager scan modes allow filmmakers to maximize the performance of the high-speed sensor for their applications. Other new imager scan modes include the addition of 24.00fps to the X-OCN 16:9 imager mode.

BURANO version 2.0 adds a 1.8x de-squeeze setting, as well as high frame rate (S&Q) modes including 66, 72, 75, 88, 90, 96 and 110fps, and also supports proxy recording at 24.00fps.
Monitoring, SDI and Metadata Improvements
In addition to the new recording format, version 2.0 brings a variety of monitoring and metadata improvements, including standardized SDI video output for monitoring across X-OCN and XAVC, adding breathing compensation and stabilization metadata in X-OCN, and timecode and clip name metadata on the SDI output.
Based on feedback from BURANO users, version 2.0 offers improvements to the on-screen display, including a viewfinder gamma display assist function when monitoring using S-Log3.
Version 2.0 supports 24V output when using PL mount lenses, and also adds compatibility with focus/iris/zoom control for PL mount lenses when using the optional GP-VR100 hand grip.
Improved video output and added exposure tool
BURANO version 2.0 includes several video output improvements, including improved video output when using the preset S-Log3 looks or the 3D User LUT. Additionally, version 2.0 improves autofocus performance when recording at 23.98, 24, 25 and 29.97 frame rates.
Version 2.0 also features new exposure tools (high key/low key) derived from the flagship VENICE camera, an expansion of the white balance memory presets from 3 to 8, and active/high image stabilization support in full frame crop 6K and Super35 1.9K 16:9 imager modes.
Complementing the video output improvements, BURANO version 2.0 adds convenience features such as media formatting from the status screen and the ability to set CAM ID and reel numbers, which are standard for documentaries and reality TV shows.
Version 2.0 changes the factory default frequency setting from 59.94 to 23.98p and also adds a “Reset to factory default settings” setting.
Finally, BURANO version 2.0 adds live event and multicam functionality, including variable ND control from the RCP, improved camera control from the Camera Remote SDK, and tally control for devices connected over LAN.
Sony BURANO version 2.0 is scheduled for release in March 2025. Filmmakers will be able to easily download the update to their camera using their Mac or PC.
