Sony announced the release of the α7 V body, the fifth generation model in the α7 series of full-frame mirrorless cameras, on December 19, 2025. The estimated market price is approximately 420,000 yen (tax included). The zoom lens kit (FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II) is scheduled for release after spring 2026, and is expected to cost approximately 440,000 yen (tax included). Pre-orders will begin at 10:00 AM on December 9th.
What is the Sony α7 V
The α7V is positioned as a model that redefines the standard for basic models, and is equipped with a newly developed full-frame partially stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with approximately 33 effective megapixels. This achieves a readout speed approximately 4.5 times faster than the previous model, the α7IV. The image processing engine is the new BIONZ XR2, which integrates the performance of an AI processing unit, improving the processing power of the entire system.

In terms of continuous shooting performance, blackout-free shooting is now possible at up to approximately 30 frames per second with AF and AE tracking. This figure is when using the electronic shutter, and high-speed continuous shooting performance is maintained even when shooting in 14-bit RAW. In addition, the Sony α7 V comes equipped with a pre-shooting function that can record up to one second of the moment immediately before the shutter button is fully pressed, making it ideal for photographing subjects whose movements are difficult to predict, such as sports or wildlife. Subject recognition performance has also been improved using AI technology, with eye recognition accuracy improved by approximately 30% compared to previous models, and a wide range of subjects can be recognized, including people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes. A new auto mode has also been implemented, in which the camera automatically identifies the target subject.

Sony α7 V Image Quality
In terms of still image quality, the camera achieves a maximum dynamic range of 16 stops, enabling smooth gradation even in scenes with large differences in brightness. It also features an auto white balance function that utilizes light source estimation using deep learning technology, accurately identifying ambient light and reproducing natural colors.
As for video capabilities, it supports 4K60p recording with 7K oversampling in full-frame and 4K120p recording in Super 35mm format, enabling high-definition video production with full pixel readout. The image stabilization function is equipped with a “Dynamic Active Mode” to improve stability when shooting handheld, and also features an auto-framing function that uses AI to capture the subject with the optimal composition.
In terms of hardware, the camera features a 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor that allows shooting at any angle, a durable magnesium alloy body, and a dust- and water-resistant design. Its communication function supports Wi-Fi 6E, supporting high-speed data transfer.

New Lens Announced
The standard zoom lens “FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II” announced at the same time is scheduled for release on February 13, 2026. It is a compact and lightweight lens that covers frequently used focal lengths, and is designed to maximize the high-speed continuous shooting performance of the α7 V.
When shooting video, it supports breathing correction to reduce fluctuations in the angle of view due to focus position, and coordinated control of image stabilization with the camera body, making it expected to be used in a wide range of scenes, both for still images and videos.
