Sony has announced the upcoming release of new firmware updates for its FX6 Cinema Line full-frame camera and VENICE 2 CineAlta camera.
FX6 version 4.0
FX6 version 4.0 enhances the functions of cinema shooting. Add new features such as anamorphic lens de-squeeze function and autofocus in S&Q mode. With feedback from cinema shooters, FX6 version 4.0 offers a de-squeeze feature for anamorphic lenses with 1.3x and 2.0x options. This mode allows the cinematographer to select a de-squeeze factor for his HDMI output image and the image displayed in the viewfinder.
FX6 version 4.0 also added support for autofocus in S&Q mode. Autofocus is possible at 7fps or higher in S&Q (slow & quick) mode.
FX6 version 4.0 also includes Cine EI Quick support, offering the same production workflow as Cinema Line cameras such as FX30 and FX3. The filenames will be the same as high-end CineAlta cameras such as the FX9, VENICE and VENICE 2, facilitating an easier workflow, especially in multi-camera setups.
VENICE 2 version 2.1
VENICE 2 version 2.1 improves zoom functionality when the imager has a 3:2 aspect ratio. The current Zoom to Fit feature cuts the sides of the 17:9 viewing angle, resulting in a narrower angle than expected. In version 2.1 it was improved to crop 16:9 out of full frame 3:2 area. In addition, a function has been added to zoom to 2.39:1 in 3:2 imager mode.
VENICE 2 version 3.0
Version 3.0 supports the most requested new external frameline generator tool. Sony’s new frameline generator enables import/export functionality for frameline generation. Additionally, version 3.0 improves the high frame rate mode, allowing cinematographers to shoot at 90fps with a 2x anamorphic lens.
Also included is the ability to add a new 33.333 variable FPS for flicker prevention at 50Hz.
Additionally, version 3.0 adds new features to further enhance the use of VENICE 2 in the growing live cinema multicam market.
Version 3.0 improves the paint menu and RM/RCP controls for live content creation, adding saturation, skin detail, white balance and shutter adjustments even when RCP/RM paint controls are off. Version 3.0 also allows 3D-LUT selection when RCP/RM paint control is on.
The FX6 version 4.0 and VENICE 2 version 2.1 firmware updates will be previewed at the Sony booth during the Cine Gear Expo June 1-4 at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
FX6 version 4.0 and VENICE 2 version 2.1 updates will be available in summer 2023, and VENICE 2 version 3.0 in early 2024.
