Canon announced the release the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL, a 3D imaging lens for the EOS VR SYSTEM that is compatible with APS-C cameras, in mid November 2024.
*As of October 29, 2024, the only compatible camera is the EOS R7. Firmware version 1.6.0 or later is required.
Canon RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL Features
A 3D lens that captures images with a three-dimensional feel when shooting close-ups of the subject
By setting the distance between the two lenses at approximately 11.8mm, narrower than that of the “RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE,” it is possible to capture high-quality 3D images even when shooting close-up, with the subject at a distance of less than 50cm. Even when shooting scenes where the subject is working closely with their hands, such as cooking or paper crafts, or when shooting close-up images of pets, it is possible to capture images that express texture and three-dimensionality, allowing you to enjoy 3D images that seem as if they are really there.
Achieves both high image quality across the entire screen and comfortable operability thanks to the incorporation of an AF mechanism
By effectively arranging nine lenses in seven groups, including two “UD (Ultra low Dispersion) lenses,” high image quality is achieved across the entire screen. In addition, the lens configuration does not use prisms, resulting in a compact and lightweight design weighing approximately 131g. In addition, the camera is equipped with a twin-lens linked AF mechanism driven by a stepping motor (STM), enabling high-speed, high-precision AF with the same feel as a general RF lens.
Supports a variety of viewing formats when used in conjunction with the EOS VR SYSTEM dedicated application
The PC app for the EOS VR SYSTEM, “EOS VR Utility,” not only allows output in 3D Theater format, but also allows conversion to 180° VR format, 360° VR format, and the MV-HEVC format that is compatible with Apple Vision Pro’s “Spatial Video” (conversion to MV-HEVC format is only available on macOS and Apple Silicon Mac).
In addition, the “EOS VR Plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro”, a plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro (sold separately), supports a variety of viewing formats, including conversion to 180° VR format.
