Fujifilm Corporation announced the development of its first filmmaking camera, the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA, which it aims to release in 2025.
The FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA is a film production camera equipped with the “GFX 102MP CMOS II HS” large-format sensor that is about 1.7 times the size of a 35mm sensor, and a high-speed “X-Processor 5” image processing engine, which allows for rich gradation and three-dimensional image expression, as well as a high degree of freedom in post-production. The GFX 102MP CMOS II HS and X-Processor 5 used in the GFX ETERNA are the latest devices installed in the FUJIFILM GFX100 II mirrorless digital camera.
Shortly after its founding in 1934, the Fujifilm Group developed and released Japan’s first domestically produced positive film for cinema. Since then, the company has commercialized the ETERNA series of color negative film for cinema, the Premista series and the ZK series of zoom lenses for cinema cameras, and other products. For 90 years since its founding, the company has provided products used in film production sites in the cinema industry and elsewhere. In addition, while introducing photographic film, cameras and other photography equipment to the market, the company released the GFX series, a groundbreaking mirrorless digital camera in 2017 that features a large-format sensor that is about 1.7 times the size of a 35mm sensor and achieves high image quality. The GFX series has been further improved by strengthening its video functions.
What’s in the name?
The product name GFX ETERNA embodies the desire to “become a leader in a new era of filmmaking that produces masterpieces that will last forever.” Currently, in addition to the GFX ETERNA, the company is also developing a power zoom lens (effective focal length equivalent to 32-90mm) optimized for the camera, as well as a mount adapter that will allow the use of PL mount lenses, which are widely used in film production.
In recent years, as the demand for production of not only full-scale movies but also short films, documentaries, web videos, etc. has expanded, there is a growing need in the video production industry to produce high-quality videos in a short period of time and at low cost. As the company advances field testing in preparation for the release of GFX ETERNA, it plans to contribute to high-quality and efficient video production in a wide range of fields by expanding its product lineup to enhance the GFX system.
The GFX ETERNA will be exhibited at the company’s booth at InterBEE 2024, which will be held from November 13th to 15th, 2024 (Hall 7, Booth No. 7204).
