What is the L Mount?
The “L-mount” lens mount standard is characterized by its robustness, precision, and high compatibility, ensuring continued use in the future and meeting the high-level requirements of photography. Developed by Leica, its technological development has continued since its inception by Leica and its strategic partners. As a result, significant improvements have been made, evolving into a more advanced and essentially new mount standard to this day. The lineup of cameras and lenses that adopt the “L-mount” is continuously expanding with existing and new members, currently numbering over 20 camera models and over 134 lenses. While these lenses are each dedicated to specific camera systems of the “L-mount Alliance,” they can be attached to other camera systems that use the “L-mount” without adapters and used without functional limitations. This is one of the many advantages of adopting a common mount standard.
Valentino Di Leonardo, who is in charge of technical and licensing management at Leica, commented as follows:
“The L-mount Alliance has been at the core of Leica’s strategy since its inception, symbolizing openness, innovation, and the highest standards in the imaging field. The addition of Freefly Systems means we have welcomed a company with a strong reputation in the camera movement and aerial photography as a partner.”
“Freefly Systems’ expertise brings yet another new creative possibility to the “L-mount” ecosystem. This will be particularly beneficial to professional filmmaking and high-end video production workflows.”
“Moving forward, we will continue to work with our member companies to develop highly versatile systems that can be used continuously into the future, meeting the ever-evolving needs of photographers and video producers.”
Freefly Systems CEO Tabb Firchau commented as follows:
“Freefly Systems is absolutely committed to creating the world’s fastest cameras and the world’s most robust drones. By joining the L-Mount Alliance, we can achieve even greater speeds than before. Furthermore, adopting the “L-mount” for the product allows for the attachment of a wide variety of lenses. You’ll be able to use a number of excellent lenses that are lightweight, compact, and equipped with advanced electronic technology that enables the fantastic option of electronic camera control.”
“Our company looks forward to contributing to the “L-Mount Alliance.” I also hope that “L-Mount” products will be used in areas where they haven’t yet made inroads, such as rocket launches and dealing with forest fires.”
