PRONEWS AWARD 2023 Grand Prize – No Winner for 2023

Looking back at 2023, there were countless new product announcements this year, many nominated for a PRONEWS Award 2023 in their respective category. Particularly impressive were the arrival of small cameras like the Osmo Pocket 3, RED’s KOMODO-X, and Sony’s BURANO cinema cameras. Cinema cameras have settled down with the arrival of the ARRI ALEXA 35, and we are reaching the point where all consumer cameras have sufficient performance. How will cameras evolve in 2024? It’s a completely unpredictable situation.

Compared to last year, game-changing gear was not so much of the theme this year. Sure, open-gate sensor technology was commercialized, but unlike the Sony FR7, there wasn’t so much of a standout this year in terms of new gear. As such, the Japanese team did not name a grand prize winner for the PRONEWS Award 2023.

In a previous article, our reviewer Thierry did outline a number of the highlights of the year. He outlined the Panasonic Lumix S5 iiX and the Nikon Z8. Web editor Zach mentioned at InterBEE his excitement for the Nikon Z f full-frame manual control camera. These cameras, while unique and powerful, did not shake up the landscape as much though, and were not awarded the grand prize.

Even under such circumstances, the arrival of the iPhone 15 Pro series was revolutionary. Even though it is a smartphone, the iPhone 15 Pro supports ProRes or Log recording, and can record to an external SSD from the USB-C port. These developments are substantial progress in the world of cellphone videography, further liberalizing the industry to newcomers.

More than 10 years ago, it felt like a revolution is returning in the world of cameras, with the video shooting of still cameras like the Nikon D90 and Canon EOS 5D Mark II rivaling the expressions of cinema film cameras. However, this year felt a bit different. Even with the Sony Burano (pictured below), methods and technology did not revolutionize so much in 2023. Also because the Burano is not being fully released until this year, we did not award the Burano a nomination. Standby for this year’s nominees in November, however, if you are a Sony fan!

In light of this situation, we have been thinking about the 2023 PRONEWS AWARD Grand Prize even more than usual, and this time we have decided that the Grand Prize would be very difficult to award. We understand there might be disappointment in this regard, and we apologize.

However, let’s not look at this with a negative light.

Generative AI, which began with the appearance of ChatGPI in early 2023, has also made remarkable progress. It has had a great influence not only on images but also on the world of video. It is becoming indistinguishable from the video that was taken.
