Permanent volumetric video system installed at Tokyo Dome
Canon, the Yomiuri Giants ownership group, and Nippon Television Network have announced the installation of a volumetric video system at the Tokyo Dome with the aim of creating new ways to enjoy watching baseball games.
All of the Yomiuri Giants games to be held at the Tokyo Dome this season, which will start the season on March 31, 2023, will be filmed using a volumetric video system and will be used as replays and highlights for TV broadcasts. .
Volumetric video technology converts the movements of athletes and performers into 3D data, enabling them to be viewed from all sorts of directions. In recent years, the range of utilization has expanded, mainly in the fields of sports and entertainment.
With the introduction of a volumetric video system developed by Canon, it is possible to create replay footage of every scene, such as batting, base running, and splendid defensive cooperation, with 360° free camera work. This new system can create images from viewpoints that cannot be captured with a normal camera, such as a player’s perspective image, or an image that makes the viewer feel as if they are inside the field, or a highlight image that freezes time at the moment of a fine play and moves freely around the top, bottom, left, and right. The aim is to make baseball broadcasts possible, easier to understand, and more enjoyable.
The new system will be used in live broadcasts of all home games of the Giants to be held at the Tokyo Dome this season, and will fully convey the appeal and depth of baseball.
