SAMYANG’s first large-aperture zoom lens for the L-mount is here, the SAMYANG AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 L. This new lens will be released on July 19, 2024. The estimated market price is 183,000 yen including tax, approximately $1,500.
The SAMYANG AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 FE covers five commonly used focal lengths (35/50/85/135/150) from wide-angle 35mm to telephoto 150mm. It can be used as a replacement for a prime lens and can be used in a variety of situations, from portraits to event photography, travel, snapshots, and product photography, without having to change lenses.
Lens construction
The lens is made up of 21 elements in 18 groups, with 12 special lenses in the latest optical design. It delivers excellent resolution across the entire zoom range. Even when combined with a camera equipped with a high-pixel sensor, it is possible to obtain sharp images from the center to the periphery of the image. In addition, UMC (Ultra Multi Coating) suppresses the occurrence of flare and ghosting, achieving natural and clear images.
The large aperture of F2-2.8 allows you to obtain beautiful and soft bokeh throughout the entire zoom range. By utilizing the shallow depth of field, you can effectively separate the subject from the background and make the subject stand out even more. The clear and natural bokeh created by the nine aperture blades allows you to capture beautiful night scenes.
The lens is also equipped with SAMYANG’s unique Linear STM. The high-speed, high-precision AF allows for accurate and quick tracking of the subject in both still and video images. The minimum shooting distance is 33cm at the focal length of 35mm and 85cm at the focal length of 150mm.
A total of 11 points on the body are weather sealed to protect the lens from light rain, snow, dust, etc.
Custom Switches
In MODE1, it functions as a normal focus ring. MODE2 allows for the aperture to be adjusted with the focus ring during autofocus. In MF, it can be operated in Linear MF mode, where the focus movement speed is constant. MODE3 is the mode for taking dolly shots. With just this lens, you can take dolly shots, which are one of the video special effects.
Focus Hold Button
During AF, the focus position can be fixed while the focus hold button is pressed (functions such as “eye AF” can also be assigned from the camera body). During MF, pressing the focus hold button for more than three seconds will store the current focus position in the lens, and you can always return to that focus position by pressing the button. There are two focus hold buttons, so if you store two focus positions, you can create the effect of changing the focus position.
