Sony announced that it is developing the RIALTO 65 image sensor block for the VENICE 2, which supports the 65mm format, as the next generation of its CineAlta digital cinema camera lineup, with a target release date of the first half of 2027.
The most notable feature of the Sony RIALTO 65 is its industry-leading 3:2 image sensor with a diagonal of approximately 64.60mm (53.75mm x 35.83mm). It boasts approximately 2.2 times the light-receiving area of a full-frame sensor and supports 9.6K 3:2 open-gate shooting. This enables the extremely shallow depth of field characteristic of the 65mm format and allows for image expression with overwhelming three-dimensionality.
Sony RIALTO 65 Replaces Existing Venice 2 Sensor Block
Operationally, by replacing the sensor block of the existing “VENICE 2” with this unit, the entire system can function as a 65mm cinema camera. Similar to the “VENICE Extension System Mini,” it also inherits the mobility of being able to detach the sensor block from the main unit for shooting, achieving both high-quality images with a large sensor and highly flexible camera work.
The actual machine will be on display at the “Cine Gear Expo” to be held in Los Angeles in June 2026. It is expected to attract a lot of attention from cinematographers around the world who aspire to create immersive works for large screens.
