Tamron Corporation announced the upcoming release of the Nikon Z-mount version of its large-aperture standard zoom lens, the “20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062),” for full-frame mirrorless cameras on October 22, 2026.
This product is a Nikon Z-mount version of the lens that was released in 2022 for Sony E-mount. It covers a range from wide-angle 20mm to standard 40mm and maintains a bright f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range. The Nikon Z-mount version features a compact and lightweight design, weighing 380g, with a maximum diameter of φ74.4mm and a length of 88.7mm.
F2.8 zoom lens covering wide-angle 20mm to standard 40mm range.
Unlike typical 24-70mm class standard zoom lenses, the 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD employs a focal length that extends the wide-angle end to 20mm.
The 20mm setting allows you to capture wide spaces and landscapes dynamically, while the 40mm setting is suitable for snapshots and portraits. This configuration prioritizes wide-angle photography while also covering everyday shooting needs with a single lens.

When used with an APS-C size Nikon Z mount camera, the angle of view will be equivalent to approximately 30-60mm in 35mm format.
In terms of portability, a key feature is its design, weighing only 380g. According to Tamron, as of August 2026, it will be the smallest and lightest in its class as a large-aperture f/2.8 standard zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras.
High-speed autofocus with VXD enables video and vlog shooting.
The camera employs a linear motor focus mechanism called “VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive)” for autofocus drive. This enables smooth focusing not only for still images but also for video recording thanks to its high-speed and high-precision AF control.
The 20mm wide-angle end is ideal for vlogs and selfies where you want to capture a wide background. The compact lens design makes it easy to handle, whether shooting handheld or with a gimbal.
Furthermore, the zoom ring’s rotation angle is set to 65°, allowing you to change the angle of view from 20mm to 40mm with minimal adjustment. This design also takes into consideration quick framing changes during shooting.
Minimum focusing distance of 0.17m, supports wide-angle macro photography at wide-angle end.
At the wide-angle end of 20mm, the minimum focusing distance is 0.17m and the maximum magnification is 1:3.8. When zoomed to 40mm, the minimum focusing distance is 0.29m and the maximum magnification is 1:5.1.
At the wide-angle end, you can capture the surrounding background while getting close to the subject, enabling a wide-macro-like expression that shows both the subject and the shooting environment simultaneously.
The optical system consists of 11 groups and 12 elements. Special glass materials such as GM (glass-molded aspherical) lenses and LD (extra-low dispersion) lenses are used to suppress various aberrations and pursue image quality across the entire zoom range.
Compatible with TAMRON Lens Utility. Designed with ease of use and weather resistance in mind.
It is compatible with the dedicated software “TAMRON Lens Utility,” allowing you to customize various lens functions to suit your shooting style.
The filter diameter is φ67mm, which is the same as several full-frame mirrorless lenses offered by Tamron. Another feature is that ND filters and PL filters work across multiple similar lenses.
Furthermore, it features a simple splash-proof structure and an anti-fouling coating on the front element of the lens, making it suitable for outdoor photography.
